trimming around the ears

I'm attempting to grow my hair out for the first time. The hair right around my ears is really bothering me and I have noticed that some men trim the hair around the ears while letting the rest grow out. This seems simple enough, but how to you determine what hair to cut short and what to leave long. I worry about going in to get that area trimmed and my "long hair line" slowly moving up my head. Does that make sense? any suggetions?

I use a small pair of scizzors, trim up my sideburn up to about the top of my ear.

There are some hairs (especially around the front half of the ear
that will NEVER amount to much...EXCEPT that they can aggravate and drive you NuTs!
I trim the hairs immediately surrounding the ear in front...that is...
from about the top and down toward the side tap, as these hairs are genetically
programmed to stay short & kinky.
Good Luck

Actually, it depends upon your genetic makeup. What you say certainly is true for my brother. But it's not the case for me. I just sampled a hair right at the hair line above my ear. It is straight and about 18 inches long. My sideburn-type hair does not start until just in front of where my ear attaches to my head.
The first time I noticed that my brother's sideburns essentially go right over his ear, I thought it was odd. I can see that it would be very annoying.

I went back for a closer look in the mirror to see more accurately
what the case was with my hair:
Now I would like to correct my original post to say that maybe 3/4
of the hair around my ears IS long and almost reaches my tail...
so I obviously do NOT trim that part.
Guess it is only the small section next to the side tap itself!

Hey Mac,
It comes down to what you like. Everyone is different. If there are certain areas you like to have trimmed up, then go for it!
