Thinning your hair?

I recently heard that you can go to a stylist and if your hair is thick they can use these special scissors that cut your hair to make it thinner and reduce the bulk. Anyone ever try this? Anyone got some stories to share? I wonder how good it makes it, and then how well it works in the long run.
Bad idea...

First off, for someone wanting to grow long hair, thicker hair is best in the long run once it gets real long because it hangs down better and looks fuller. Two, thinning hair with those scissors is a very bad idea. I'll try and explain: When those scissors go through your hair and cut, they cut some hair, and miss some hair because of the way the teeth are gapped apart. So now what you have are hundreds of short hairs in amongst hundreds of long hairs which totally messes up the long hair growth consistency. What you get is a bunch of short hairs that will eventually, if not right away, start to stick out and protrude through all the longer hairs and make a total mess. Bad idea in my book. I know because I have had it done in the past and it makes a total mess of things. Your call though! Peace!
A fine explanation...

What if your hair is only 5 inches or so long? Still a bad idea, even if thats just the length you wanna keep it?

For maintaining shorter lengths that could be considered on the shorter long side even, I suppose it wouldn't be or look so bad, but as far as going for the main objective of this long haired community, which is looong hair, I wouldn't recommend it at all. Peace!

Yeah Cause I have my hair 5 inches all over and this is how I will want to keep it for now, so I guess thinning may work well for this length.

Couldn'ta said it better myself! This is what my hair resembled when I had it inadvertently thinned (after that braiding incident I mentioned a while back). In my opinion, it leads to frizziness as well because the shorter hairs start to stick up and get poofy. And like Treyn says, the length of your hair will not be consistent. Plus I think it will require a good deal of upkeep. Better to leave the thickness of your mane to Nature, I say. 'Sides, thick hair is a blessing, doncha think? Lots more hair to run the fingers through!

Years ago when I grew my hair out the first time, I was frustrated because my hair was so thick and so I went by my stylist's advice and had her use the thinning shears. Like Treyn stated, it was a bad idea. The key really is to just let it all grow out. The weight of your hair, once it gets longer, will do MUCH more than those thinning shears could do. Believe me, you'll be pulling yourself way back. Be thankful that your hair looks thick now, because the weight of your hair later will make it look thinner anyway. Hope that helps.

To find out if this will work for you the best and only way to find out is to go to a stylist! Asking strangers who have never seen your hair on a long hair board you will not get an answer that will do you any good. Find a great salon and visit them, ask them your questions and go from there
Best of luck
