Thinking About Getting a Trim
Posted by Evil Milkman on September 08, 2003 at 13:58:17: Previous Next
Lately, I've noticed my hair is in less than perfect condition. Last night I found a hair that was starting to split, and my hair doesn't feel quite as soft as it used to at the ends.
Also, the last haircut I had was back in mid July, 2002. When I had this cut, she put many different layers in it, and it's all different lengths.
I'm thinking about getting a little trim to remove some of the bad ends and even my hair out so that it grows more evenly. I think it would be more tolerable. Even if I lost 1/4 inch, it would only set me back two weeks.
I'm going to tell the stylist (at a nice salon) that I'm going for shoulder blade length hair and that I don't want any major length taken off. I'm actually kind of nervous that she'll screw it up. :p
Any thoughts/comments/questions/tips before I make an appointment?

Oh yay! I'm good at this ^_^
First off, go to a stylist you trust. Ask friends or family if you don't have one. Secondly, make sure he/she knows EXACTLY what you want before you even get in the chair. You could probably mention to the receptionist at the salon that you'd like to talk to the stylist first (a consultation, more or less). If he/she seems unsure, isn't listening, etc., hightail it out of there, and don't worry about hurt feelings. I know far too many people who have gotten less-than-desireable haircuts because of this reason.
My stepmom is a hairdresser, and she mentioned that most stylists tend to cut a little shorter than you ask for, so keep this in mind.
I think that's about it, but I'll be sure to post anything that I think of later.

Be VERY clear about what you want. Don't give the stylist anything other than VERY SPECIFIC instructions. Tell them exactly what you want. Don't say "trim the split ends". I made that mistake once and ended up with a complete hack job! Tell them you want the ends trimmed, and NO MORE THAN 1/4" cut off...regardless of any circumstances.
Like Jenn said, go to someone you trust. If you don't know anyone, do a quick "interview" upfront.
If you get a good cut, you have found someone you can trust. If you get a cut that you don't like, or if it's cut too short, refuse to pay. That's what I did. I will not pay for a cut I specifically said I didn't want!

not a bad idea. You may have a much healthier head of hair after the trim.
Just a comment. Definitely let the hair dresser know that you just want the ends micro trimmed. And re-iterate that you pretty much want to look the same going out, as you did going in. Just touched up a bit. :) she/he will get the hint your not messing around.
Thanks all!

The tips are helpful. I'll definitely be very clear about what I want.
My sister mentioned a stylist or two that would very good, so I called in earlier and scheduled it with her for noon tomorrow.
Wish me luck...
Good Luck, my friend... (n/t)

Well, the visit went pretty well. She trimmed exactly what I wanted, but I was apprehensive because she didn't ask questions throughout.
Overall, it turned out well! Basically, she trimmed off the bleached ends and evened things up a little bit. I was relieved when I walked out with the great majority of my hair left! :)

It has been a while since your last update, how about some new pictures. I for one enjoy watching the progress

I would, but I don't have access to a digital camera anymore (g/f and I broke up, she had the cam). So I'm out of luck for a while. :(
