Negative Ramblings

Hey guys, I just gotta say, I was camping this weekend and having longer hair was kind of a pain. I know that it was just this weekend but sometimes I wonder: why? Why do we spend so much time worrying about our hair and trying to make it nice and all that stuff? I mean supposedly you just have to experiment around an eventually you'll find something that works for you but I've been doing this a long time and I don't know if I have the time/money/energy to keep up with it! I mean there are times when I just love having it long and I know as soon as I cut it I will regret it but I just have to wonder: wouldn't it be so much easier to have it short? I'm not trying to put anyone down at all, I wish I had longer hair, it just sometimes gets me down cause it seems so hard to deal with.
If you LOVE your hair...

If you LOVE your hair...you won't fall victim to all those 'negative ramblings.'
Maybe it's just me, but I had more of those 'negative' thoughts when my hair was shorter.
Now that it is much longer, I think of my hair as a part of me...
which, of course, it is.
But it's MORE than that: HAIR BECOMES a part of your PERSONality...
As you know, it takes a long time to grow hair long...and during that period...
your personality makes MANY 'adjustments' to it...transforming you into
some 'other' kind of person, almost. Yes, it's a strange sensation
to see a photo of yourself with short hair and wonder: "WHO was that?"
I am NOT the same person I was back when I had short hair. And I have no idea HOW
the process of CHANGE transforms someone into a Longhair...
Maybe it is something that begins somewhere in our soul or
spirit...or (if that sounds too weird for you) from some place
deep in your subconscious mind.
WHERE do our preferences & desires come from, anyway?
But I'm not the same person...not to myself...and not to the people around me.
If you have any more 'negative ramblings' and those thoughts get a grip on you...
and then you decide that being a Longhair is NOT something for YOU
that's fine! Just follow your deepest & truest feelings: Do what's right for YOU...but...
please be sure BEFORE making any final decisions...and...
Good Luck! We are here for you if you need further venting...

Aye, LucksKind, here is where we disagree... I feel that long hair is merely an extended version of short hair, and the only reason we are psychologically different from our shorthaired peers is because we may be subject to more stereotypes, etc. But then again, how do Asians feel? What about black people? We don't have it any worse off than they do, or ever did. We are no different as people, only that we carry a greater burden on our shoulders, physically (or the tops of our heads, literally), and if we seem to ourselves to be "different" because of the length of our hair, then we need a reality check, if you will.
I hope this didn't offend you, but I've seen a lot of posts like this, and I finally answered one. I just think that the "long hair has an effect on the subconscious mind/spirit" view is a bit far-fetched, at the least.
Do you think that people are fundamentally different because of the color of their skin? I don't. Why for the length of the hair?

Can only speak for myself, but...
as my hair grew LONGer...I was transformed...
from within and from without...as people adjusted to the 'new' me...
I suppose different situations will produce varying results but
in any place where people are taken aback or amazed or disapproving or whatever...
changes are bound to occur.
My world has changed...and that is all I know for sure...
Others may not be affected as much by having longer hair...
but my mane transformed me into a different man.
So, to each its own, I guess!
Thanx for your comments.

Actually short hair is a shorter version of long hair. Hair grows long naturally and one must cut and cut often to keep it short. If people are constantly doing this then they are trying harder to create an image, stereotype, social climate, etc. than longhairs ever have.
Perhaps the people who are TRYING to be fundamentally different are the ones cutting their hair all the time...eh?
You can be fundamentally different simply by the community you were raised in or if you are trying to be.

Totally agree with you. your hair redefines your personality. The world around you begins to see you differently and you begin to see the world around you differently.

Yes, it is more difficult to keep long hair healthy, but it is the only thing that looks decent on ME. You might look great with short hair as well as long, but that's your call. If you feel that you'd be more comfortable, at ease, and better off with short hair, nothing should stop you from cutting it. If you want to keep it long, all I can tell you is just to learn to deal with the patterns of washing/conditioning, etc.

I know how you feel... short hair is more practical... takes less time/effort to take care of. However at least for me, it's something i want to try. I am goingt to let my hair grow as long as I can tolerate and then decide. To be honest I also feel I look better with long hair but it is true it does require more care. All good things come at a price?
I think it's natural to feel like you do and I have thought the same many times. Stick it through. It's better to regret what you have done than something you have not.

: Why do we spend so much time worrying about our hair and trying to make it nice and all that stuff?
I can't speak for everyone else here, but I don't worry about my hair at all. I never have. I just do what I can to keep it clean, and let it do its own thing.
: I mean supposedly you just have to experiment around an eventually you'll find something that works for you...
It doesn't get any simpler than:
1) Brush Hair Out
2) Wet Hair
3) Shampoo
4) Rinse
5) Condition
6) Rinse
7) Wrap in towel for 5 minutes
8) Comb with fingers
9) Spritz some styling gel
10) Comb with fingers again, and voila!
: but I've been doing this a long time and I don't know if I have the time/money/energy to keep up with it!
It takes me less than 20 minutes to shower and wash my hair. Once its dry, I leave it alone.
: Wouldn't it be so much easier to have it short?
Well, duh. No one ever said having long hair is easy. Of course it requires some degree of maintenance, but the question you have to ask yourself is whether the maintenance is worth the look. Personally, I say yes.
: I'm not trying to put anyone down at all, I wish I had longer hair, it just sometimes gets me down cause it seems so hard to deal with.
I won't deny that there are situations (like camping) where short hair would be nicer to have. But, that's when a ponytail comes in handy.
:)
Lighten up, dude. You'll be ok.
Agreed!...Nice Post :) [n/t]

Actually, I think long hair is rather a camping, great outdoors look. Long hair is just simply the most natural look of all to me anyway. Thought I'd comment there. Peace!

For sleeping warm, you also can't beat having long hair and a bushy beard. Together they seal that irritating gap at the top of your sleeping bag where cold air otherwise seeps in all night. Long hair and a beard combine to act thermally like your neck is surrounded by a thick mass of foam rubber.
As for hair care, just shift to "washing in water" techniques if you don't want to mess with hair products. Just about any creek will do.

I go camping a lot, and I'm still trying to figure out why short hair would be better for camping? No, really! I honestly can't figure out what the original poster's point was.
