1 year of growth, keep or cut?

Hello everyone. I've posted here just a couple of times before, and have been reading the boards for over a year. Last year almost exactly 1 year ago, I stopped cutting my hair. I'm not sure exactly how long my hair is right now. I'm guessing from root to tip it would be maybe 8 inches. I haven't trimmed or shaped it any, so it falls and layers in a way really similar to Aragorn in the new LOTR movies. (Similar length and curl too, but I'm blonde.)
I'm kind of unsure what to do with it at this point though, because I really like my hair, but all my tightest friends are telling me that with my type of hair, it will start to look horrible if I let it grow any longer, so I need to cut it.
This may be really difficult to get advice for, since I don't have a digital camera or any way to get pictures of my hair onto the net, but I guess I was asking if there was anyone else who has medium-curly hair (mostly wavy, and then forms rings and spirals in the bottom two inches) who would know what to do with it to make it look good. Despite my friend's suggestions, will it look decent if I continue to grow it, or should I have it trimmed to be less layered and more rounded at the back, or should I just go back to the classic 1" prep hair cut?
Sorry to take up everyone's time, but I'd really appreciate advice, if you can give it.

Don't worry so much about what your friends tell you. If you like your hair, then you should keep it. Many people have your hair type and with the aid of products and trims have pulled it off wonderfully.
Even if it looks bad now...in a year or two..it will look awesome.
Your hair type is common..not just for guys..but for the women too. Do you see a large percentage of women with your hair type walking around with crewcuts because they are doomed?

My suggestion is to go to a very trusted stylist and have just the slightest bit of hair trimmed all around. It will surprisingly give it some shape that you don't now have. More than that, once trimmed just a little, you can guide the look easier than you can right now. Also, I would recommend that, after having it trimmed, wait. Don't give up the growth. Wait to see how it looks, get used to it, work with it.
To me, men with long hair that is undtrimmed raises eyebrows in our society. But long haired men who occasionally have their hair trimmed, shaped, really look great and seem to more easily slip into their setting.
As for your critical friends, don't feel too harshly towards them. You and I don't walk around with a mirror in our face all day. We don't really know how we appear to our friends and associates, but they see us all the time. I really think if you get your hair slightly trimmed and shaped, wait for their comments. I know us guys with longer hair like to think we are doing our own thing, never mind how others feel, but I have to say that I don't ever want to reach a point in my appearance to where I isolate family or friends, limit my social opportunities, or destract from my employment.
Sorry to talk your eyes off here, dude. Listen to your heart and to your head and I think you'll be okay. Josh

Actually, that's really great advice, and I appreciate it a lot. I actually do have a friend who is a really great stylist, who likes my long hair, so maybe I can ask her what we could do to improve the long look. Thanks a lot man.

I think your friends are jealous...Aragorn is awesome!! (j/k) Once your hair gets long enough though, it will probably lie straighter because of its weight. My hair used to do that when it was around shoulder length, but now it's reasonably straight.
Moral of the story: don't even let your family, friends, significant others, etc. dictate what you do with your hair (or anything else for that matter). Besides the fact that a lot of people are still programmed to think girls=long hair, boys=short hair, they also have their own tastes. Whatever makes you happy is what counts. Keep it growing!

I think we have the same hair

Hi
I am sort of at the same stage and the description of your hair is very similar to mine... tight curls at the lower parts, loosser curls on top...
My suggestion is stick it out... you will never know if you don't try it... I was thinking the same a few months ago, but said to myself if you don't try how will you know... as far as what people say.. the same person that told me to cut it three months ago told me it looks awesome a few weeks ago... so don't listen to people... Do what you want for yourself...

Actually, I LOVE your hair, but my hair is way less curly than that. It's more just wavy on top, and in back has curls, but really HUGE loose ones. Kind of like those weird banana curl things girls use to do for high school dances. Blech! I'd kill to have hair like yours:-)
ask your tightest friends...

Ask your tightest friends to wait and see what actually happens to your hair...
when it does get longer!
This can work out to be FUN for both you and your friends!
Good Luck!

Hmmmmmmm..........friends? What are their credentials as experts in hair? You really like your hair. (And they no doubt know this.) So, if it really DOES look "horrible" a year from now the solution is so simple and quick. But I can't but help wonder about "friends" who seem to know everything there is to know about everyones elses business.......but their own! I think it would be best and wait to see if their prediction comes true, especially since you really like your hair.
