Depressed... but am I greedy?

Hey guys,
Well I am so unsure about growing my hair. I want to get it longer so bad but I am just not sure if it will work out alright.
You see, I used to always buzz my head, and it was just so much easier! I could just get out of the shower and go. I miss that feeling. But I also want to have longer hair super bad.
My hair is thick and wavy, and I just pulled out a few individual hairs, they are about as long as my pinky (I'm guessing that means 2-3 inches, which I know it super short compared to some of you).
I want to just be able to get out of the shower and let my hair air dry. But when I do that it makes it fluffy and not as smooth or flat down or comfortable. I have to wear a hat for about 20 minutes after I shower to get the look I want.
So I have 2 questions for all of you who can share some advice to me please.
1) Is my hair just way too short to decide? I want my hair to be like 6 inches long all over. Should that help when it gets longer like that?
2) Only having to wear a hat for 20 minutes is probably a cinch compared to what some of you have to do. Am I just being greedy in wanting to let it air dry and be good to go?
Thank you to all who take the time to respond.

Depends. It may start behaving at four inches...may take up to 9 or 10. Mine is pretty curly and it finally began to somewhat hang naturally around 7-8in.

Well....it might be a sign that you are not a true longhair from within

Well my hair is not curly, it has a wave but it's not too bad. Is four inches the general length thick wavy hair has to be before it is starts to lay down on its own better?

Everyone's hair behaves differently. The ONLY way to tell at what exact inch yours will begin to behave is to grow it to that inch. Sorry if that isn't the answer you're looking for. Best of luck.

Well I suppose that that's the only real answer you can get from anything, is to try for yourself

Hmmm, sorry to say this but I'm almost certain that 6 inches won't help...
You sound like you have hair like me... I'm currently at *gets out ruler* ... 9.5 inches, and tbh, it's only JUST started behaving. it hangs down naturally, and my confidence has grown an awful lot...
on the matter of getting out of the shower and getting on the go straight away, yes it was annoying around the 6 inch stage, and for the rest of the awkward stage... but now that i'm leaving that stage (atleast i think i'm leaving it haha) i feel as though sorting out my hair is such a chore...
so i guess my advice is... stick it out? sounds harsh but its the only way you'll get through it if you REALLY want long hair.

If you feel you want to try it ... you have to go through the process... no shortcuts... My hair id about 8 inches... and I know I had second thoughts a few times... but if I cut it I will always wonder "what if?" so I am sticking it through and we'll see...
short hair IS more practical but long hair sure looks better and after a certain point won't be much of a hassle (i hope!)

See how Mona moans on the banks of the River of Life?
Well, she moans for thee...
You are just beginning one of the Awkward Phases and are now filled with doubt.
Not many moons ago, I was there...staring in the mirror and wondering whether what I was doing
was the right thing for me.
If your hair was a bit longer, I'd suggest a tail...
Just jump out of the shower..make a tail...and you are out the door.
But you can't make a tail...and you've lost that freedom of Men Without Hair...
Please do not despair...as we all have been there...
Freedom now...or freedom later.
OR regrets?
Have what you desire now...or later?
Doubts...why doubts? The Undecided Heart...
A troubled Mind...
Decisions...Doubts...More Doubts...
and that's why Mona moans so much...
as she sits on the banks...
of the River called Life.
Good Luck...whatever you decide!

Oh really, is that why so many people come to this board then?
Well...

...yes, I'd say your desires are a bit unrealistic! :)
You mentioned that you have "thick and wavy" hair. I'd think most members here that have thick and wavy hair will tell you that 6 inches is right smack in the middle of the "awkward stage". During this awkward stage, your hair will be VERY unmanageable. It's not until your hair gets much longer until it might even begin to behave. You've only just begun the awkward stage.
As far as the hat-on-for-20 minutes-and-go bit, you better take advantage of it now!! My hair takes hours to dry now (it's about 9 inches long) and I have to wear a hat all day. I've been wearing a hat now everday (or a tube of gel) for the past YEAR.
The bottom line is that long hair takes much more effort than short hair through the awkward stage and then, for many of us, it gets a bit easier once it's longer & the weight of it holds it down (usually after about 9-12 inches of growth). However, even once the awkward stage is over I'd say it's still more to take care of then shorter hair...frizzies, longer drying time, "bad hair" days, split ends, more shampoo & conditioner needed, societal discrimination, etc. Much of this also depends on your own hair. It will come down to a balancing test for you: your desire to have long hair vs. convenience. If you have a strong desire, you'll get there, but it will be difficult...most likely. If your "kind of wanting" and "unsure" of having long hair, you'll be in for a rocky ride.
This board is very supportive, so come back often if you decide to continue on. Best of luck to you.

Sid, patience is the key. My only advice is to look at the end
goal you have set and don't worry too much about the day to day
things. Don't measure your hair every day. Stay away from this
board for a few days. Focus on other things and try not to let
your thoughts dwell on your hair.
Hang in there! :-)

A#1: I rather think a "True Longhair" KNOWS ahead of time what they want and NOTHING will stop them from growing their hair out. At 6" you will be in the "Awkward Stage," the worst part of it all.......so I doubt that 6" will be your "inspiration." (But it just might!) This whole thing is a "patience thing." Harder for some than others.
A#2: Think you are (as all of us have been) in a rush to get to the reward. Most usually all good things come with time.
Best of luck to you.

hmm, well if you have wavy hair then be prepared to take a lot longer after a shower! you will probasbly have to use a hair dryer to blow dry it straight like i have to which is a pain.

yeah, you cant have all the virtues and none of the vices. Now you can start to appreciate the trouble a lot of women go with their hair!
Unless you have straight hair which can just be air dried. it is a hassle. but it is still worth it in my opinion.
