Re-growing my hair out...I think.

You might remember my post from a while back, though I don't think most people read it...I described how I had a series of crappy trims because no one really knew how to cut my hair type well which eventually led to me chopping my chin to shoulder length hair off to less than 1" long (the shortest it's ever been). Now my hair is over 1.5" inches long on the top, and slight shorter on the sides and back. Now, I think I'm probably going to grow my hair out again, but it will probably be a different experience than before, since I had a completely different haircut when I started growing my hair out the first time. Before, I had hair a bit longer than eye-length in the front, and it was a bit tapered on the sides and back. My hair is extremely straight, even for Asian hair, so it pretty much means that the length the actual hair is is the length it will stand from the scalp (if that makes any sense at all). My first hair-growing-out experience did not really have a definite starting point, and I had to keep getting trims. Any advice as to how I should maintain my hair this time? Not trimming at all won't work because I'll probably end up with a mullet...
Right now, I can't decide if I'm aiming for chin length hair again, or going all the way out with mid-, to lower-back length hair. But that probably is irrelevant right now.

Umm i'm sorry if this isn't the answer you're after but wouldn't it be best to just stop getting trims and let it grow?
how about growing your hair to chin level, and then get the sides and back cut to even it out?
thats what i did and it seems to be the best move i ever made. :)
just gonna have to put up with the mullet effect until then ;)
forgive me if this is all wrong - i don't know what i'm talking about :P

Many people read it. I wish you'd have decided to keep the hair and go to another stylist. I'm glad you've decided to grow it out again!
If I were you, I'd keep my eye out for men with hair styles you like and ask them where they have their hair styled at. This may help you locate a good place to have your hair cut this time.

Worried about a mullet? Just get the back trimmed... let the top grow on... condition well and you won't have to worry about split ends for 6 months to a year!
