Hi!
I was a teenager in the 70's and now I've been growing my hair for 2 years. Although I've hung about some dodgy dives in my time, no one ever offered me drugs, and to this day I've never tried any! I expect people stereotype me with all the usual longhair 'vices', but the only overt criticsm of my hair so far, as I've said before, has been from my nieces, who are children.
So what are these longhair 'vices' - they've changed through time:
60's - trying to look like a girl
70's - left-wing junkie layabout
80's - tired old hippie
90's - Australian beach bum, graphic designer or rock gig promoter
2000's - It's cool again - back with a vengeance!
cheers, Barry

Not really a problem. All you have to do is say "No thanks".
Anyway, it's nothing really. One time I was just on my way out of a motorcycle show at Earl's Court in London, when a guy stopped me and said "Psst. Wanna buy some snow?". The funny part is that we were surrounded by uniformed police on all sides, maybe 8 or 10 of them. Of course, none of the cops were actually within earshot. I actually thought it was hilarious, but if I had laughed out loud it might have led to complications. What did I do? I just said a polite "No Thankyou".
Another time, long ago now, a new colleague at work decided I was the perfect person to confide in about how she spent all the previous weekend tripped out on acid. I had never mentioned illegal drugs to her. No, I didn't mention it to anyone else, or at least to no-one who would have given her any trouble. She got the sack anyway, for a non drug related reason.
These things will happen to you. Once upon a time it was justified to assume this kind of thing, you know. And before you ask the obvious question, let me refuse to answer ahead of time.

I don't need to buy snow....Mother nature gives us
plenty of it around here in January and February.
Last year on Washinton's Birthday we got about
30" of the stuff.
I've had long hair for years, never tried any
drugs.

Yeah - really weird misconceptions people have.
I'm still growing, and when people tell me I should get a haircut I tell them that I'm growing it and besides the occasional trim its gonna get longer rather than shorter.
Its strikes me as really strange that their next question is normally: "Are You Gay?"
???!!!!???!!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!??!?!?!?!?!?!?
Where did that come from?

People are just ignorant. Ina ll honesty, Gay men dont like long hair. I dont want to sound sterotypical myself, but the majority of gay men like short hair on themsleves as well as their partners. Watch any makeover show, the first thing a gay stylist does even to a woman client is cut her hair off. ( Bizzarre isnt it)
Secondly , anyone who assumes long hair guys do drugs , and associate long hair with 60's hippies and drugs, my quick response to these people are- Havent you heard of the 1980's coke and herion yuppies?
I think that would shut these people up real fast.

I go to a liberal arts school where about 50% of the students smoke marijuana on a regular basis. While I am not a frequent smoker, I do get a lot of strange looks when I turn down daily offers to smoke.
I have noticed that I get a much warmer welcome at parties than the short-haired folks. People will just walk up to me, utter a drunken "long hair...yaaaaa!!", give me a high five, and walk away.
It's good, yet I would like to get some attention for my academic efforts as well!

That rarely happens to me. More frequently, I'm asked if I know where to get some or if I have any to sell. I've never smoked it myself (other than second hand at a rock concert or something), have no interest in trying it, and I have no clue where people get the stuff.

If you have long hair, generally people will come to you to sell you drugs.

I've noticed this and other negative stereotypes. I graduated from college with a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering and I wear my hair in a ponytail. I work as an engineer, but I never get to work on any interesting projects and I have to fight to be recognized as a viable employee. I notice that other new-hires get better treatment, even though I graduated with a 3.26 GPA. I've had long hair for nine years and I view everyday as a confrontation with society and its expected norms. I'm capable of learning quickly and I often find new methods for solving problems. But, I will always be regarded as strange, dimwitted or lazy simply because my hair is longer than most other males.
BTW, I love this site. If lifts my heart to see that I'm not quite alone.

The stereotype probably arose from the hippie, 60's rebellion and anti-Vietnam war peace movement back in the 60's and early 70's when men started to grow their hair long and much of the music and pop art was oriented towards a drug culture.
Remember Timothy Leary and his "turn on, tune in, drop out" message and interest in pro-drugs books written by people like Andrew Weil, Aldous Huxley, etc.
Recreational psychedelic drugs like marijuana and LSD were fashionable along with long hair back then which strengthens the association between long hair and drugs.
Things may have changed today and many longhairs are in responsible, creative and talented jobs and not all longhairs take drugs while some shorthairs do but I guess the image and stereotype have stuck from back then.
To me, a longhair back in the 60's and early 70's generally held certain ideals and beliefs which were different from longhairs today.
Like do you still find as many longhairs on today's peach marches than you did in the 1960's?
Well, not from the pictures I've seen.
