Straight hair

I'm in the drama department at my college, and I'm playing the part of a hippy in our upcoming show. So my director requested that (if I didn't mind of course!) I straighten my hair so as to fit in with the stereotypical view of a hippy.
Well, I'd been needing an excuse anyways, so I asked a couple of girls from Collins Hall if they could straighten my hair, and boy did they! It's really odd feeling, nice and smooth, and I can actually brush it!! *haven't brushed my hair in over a year*
It also seemed to gain length, I mean, I know it appeared short cause of the curl, but I didn't realize how much! My hair fits in a ponytail! and falls on the shoulders!! When it's straight, I feel like I'm "there" as a longhair. Ah well, I shall return to my regular head o' curls after the show. . . .

Wow! You almost look like a different person! Your hair looks lighter and everything (I realize it's probably just the lighting.) I think not having the glasses adds to the different look too. Great alternate look that you should think about adopting if you ever have a dress-up occasion (school formals, whatever.)

Very cool look, a total transformation. It makes your hair appear much longer. Absalom

It looks great. How did they get your hair nice and straight like that? Could you do it on your own?

They put in some goop that was to help keep the hair itself from getting dried out, then they used a "chi" iron.
Basically, when straightening hair, a steam comes up from the iron, which is from the oil in the hair turning to steam, but with this goop, it allowed the oil to stay in my hair, and have the goop evaporate.
I might be able to do it on my own, however I'd have to buy a flat hair iron myself.

I'd be curious to find out the name of the goop and maybe try it at home. (I do have a flatiron left over from some other long ago ill-fated attempt at hair styling.)
I also got to thinking - good thing your school isn't doing "The King And I" hahahaha!!! =:@}

Bet your director is not old enough to have been a hippie, is he/she? Part of the hippie culture was going natural and rejecting false and made up appearances. If your hair was curly, it was long and curly. If it was straight, it was long and straight. Beards grew, hair grew, because that's what hair does naturally.
And stereotypes--those were things that status quo culture employed and engaged in which the hippie movement rejected.

Actually, she was in her 20's during the beaknick generation of the 50's, so she was definately around during the hippy era. But the thing is, that in a theatre production, there's this condition that we try to cultivate called "Total suspension of disbelief". And this is easier with stereotypes of different peoples and classes. Most people, when they think of a hippy, they think of the tie-dye, the long (usually straight) hair, the sandals, the vests with fringe, the colored glasses etc. . . .what they actually stood for doesn't matter to the viewer, it's all about how easily they can identify a person with a certain movement.
The main thing about straightening my hair, was to make it appear longer than if it was curly, and therefore fit in better with the stereotype of the hippy
