longhair undercut?
Posted by nickR on January 12, 2004 at 00:00:42: Previous Next
I had long hair for a while and it reached my chin when it was pulled tight. Anyways, i made a big regretful mistake by cutting it short. i am growing it out again and i was wanting to know if i should get an undercut(when it is long on top but skin short on the sides and back). my hair is real thick and a little wavy when it gets long. but it gets wavy on the sides more than on top. so i am thinking that if i get the back and the sides cut skin short than it will look a lot thinner and not as wavy. please respond with your ideas.
Thank you
Nick.
Not a good idea...

...if you are going to grow it long term. Having two completely different lengths will probably, at some point, cause a conflict and then you will do as most people with undercuts do...cut it off and want to start over.

I can only wish I had thick curly hair! I wouldn't get an undercut under any circumstances, especially with my thin hair.
The majority here doesn't go with the undercut, so I'm going to go along with the old adage "majority rules" since I have no experience with an undercut myself. I'd have to say the more experienced longhairs are more knowledgeable in this, so I'll do as they do. Plus remember, you can always cut your hair a bit later, but if it's too short you can't just put it back on, and we all know how long it takes to grow back.
This may sound rich coming from me, but I'd leave it untouched and wait until it's all grown out (or at least a good part of the way there) before deciding on an undercut. In any case, good luck man!

All I can tell you is this, I have thick wavy hair an I have an under
cut, have had it for three years and it works well for me. Its not
an extreme one. But this is entirely your decision and I'm not
advocating undercuts. If I did 99% of the people here would pounce
on me with rabid saliva dripping from their mouths.

Naw, A reverse mullet is really long bangs and short in back. Besides
the mullet deserves a class of its own, but I'm not going to bad
mouth it here because someone may have one and like it.
The only hair style that I would openly bad mouth is the buzzed/shaved
head. I think its best in the long run to live and let live.

It really depends on your long-term goal. If you wish to eventually have all one length long hair, then all an undercut will do for you is give you another awkard stage later. If you plan to keep the undercut for a long period of time, like MG has, then go for it.
It would suck to have to start all over, yet again with a bad decision made now.
Been there, done that... BAD... !!!

VERY BAD IDEA!!! For me anyway, and your hair sounds identical to mine as far as waviness on the sides and such, especially at a shorter stage. Mine is getting a bit longer and is pulling down nicely under the gradually added weight of growth. GIVE YOUR HAIR TIME!!!! It will do the same as mine and you will definetly be glad you waited. Believe me! Everyone here has heard me pout and cry in the past for the mistake I made when I got an under-cut for the same reason. I thought it would make it thinner, but all it did was leave a matt on top and it looked terribly scraggly. So I ended up cutting it back shorter and started over. My hair was to my chin before that under-cut and it was terrible having to start over after accomplishing that length. Longer growth means heavier weight and this pulls your hair down straighter and gets rid of the poofiness that happens with awkward stage thick hair. Balls in your court, dude! Feel free to check out my site link below to see my hair for comparison. PEACE!

Midlength undercut?

The only problem with an undercut is that once its done (and you've gotten any length on top) its very difficult to recover from without starting over.
Many Moons ago... I grew my hair to midlength (bottom of ears) and got an undercut. Personally I thought that looked pretty cool. Though I was 15/17 at the time.
Lets just say that 8-10 years later I wouldn't do the same again.

No is just when you only grow the top to around 6-10 inches in length so it falls around your ears rather than your shoulders or longer. It doesnt have anything to do with when you undercut it!
When we talk about "mid-length hair styles" generally we mean between ear-length and shoulder length and Generally Shoulder length & Longer is considered "Long hair."
I say Generally cos its a matter of perspective.
