Obsession? Is this normal

Hello people,
I'm upto month four of my hair growing experiment and my fringe is currently below my eyes, the back looks like a gorilla after a bad hair day in the jungle. I'm more determined than ever to grow my hair to the top of my sholders, its the third attempt and I'm not giving up yet.
What I want to know is, is it usual to be so obsessed with growing your hair it occupies my mind most of the day?
I can't forget about it and let it grow its just always on my mind, is it usual?
I would...

...say so. Especially for a man where it's not the norm to have long hair in our society. There's a constant reminder on the top of your head of what you're doing. I'd imagine that it's more on the mind of a man growing his hair out than for a woman since it's not as typical. Plus, there's the excitement that many guys here have, which is doing something they've never done before. In addition, during the awkward stage, men don't typically have the same tools to make it through this stage...i.e., the comfort of going out in public with hair clips, butterfly clips, pig tails, etc. Therefore, the daily gelling, hat wearing and trips to the work bathroom to 'clean things up' are additional reminders. Put that all together and hair is definitely on the brain...all the time! :)

Me too, I'm a woman and I don't know if that makes a difference but I'm obsessed with my hair too so I guess its normal. I hate hairdressers more then the dentist, I hate when they touch my hair so I don't go at all anymore. I'm also obsesed with mens long hair, once I will make it to touch the long hair of a man, it must feel just great....

Sure it's usual! It is exciting and something you have been looking forward to. And, it gets better for so many the longer it gets. Have fun! :-)
Been there...

I would say it to be normal in the early stages, but after a while you just kinda find a way to occupy your time, or go crazy trying! I myself obsessed in the beginning and ended making bad decisions, but after starting over and getting as far as I am now, I have it a little more in perspective and don't occupy my mind as much with it, other than the time it takes to take care of it. Peace!

Perfectly normal. It was like that for me too (and still is, although now it's like I get obsessed for a week or two, then I just don't think about it for a week, then obsessed...) because I can't wait to get to my desired length (mid-back).
I think it's a good thing because it means you're motivated to grow it.
Hang in there!

When your hair is over 3 feet long like mine, obsessing over it becomes a requirement just to keep it in good condition. Yes, obsessing over your hair is quite normal and nothing to feel overly concerned about. As your hair gets longer it needs more attention to keep it in good shape. Absalom

: Hi Sorted !
Aren't you the guy who has/had OCD? I'm in recovery from a bunch of obsessive stuff (alcoholism/anorexia - now sober 4 years and normal weight) and I accept that my attitude to my hair (and tattoing) is probably obsessive but to me they are benign obsessions that don't damage my health (mental or physical). Do you think the same or is your hair obsession a problem for you ?
Just interested - none of my business if you don't want to reply !
Laurence
That's me

Hi Laurence
Yeah - that's right - I suffered from OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) - I'm still obsessed, but I no longer feel the compulsion. So it doesnt affect my health and consequently not really the problem that it once was.
The hair growth process is partly therapy. I used to get my hair cut every 2-3 days during the worst of the illness, so I guess that now I can now go 3 months between trims it shows I'm making progress.
Better still I dont feel the need to immediately go back to the Salon and get it cut again!
For those that dont know OCD suffer's basically can
