Want to cut hair to regrow
Posted by Max on February 15, 2004 at 15:17:22: Previous Next
Greetings,
My hair is not really thick, I have been losing 1-20 hairs a day for 6 months now (ever since i started growing). Its about 6-8 inches long now and i am thinking about cutting it short to about 3-4 centermeters to treat the scalp which is itching regularly and treat the hair with eggs and olive oil and henna so it can grow thick and stop falling out. Does anyone think its a good idea to cut off my hair to regrow it with treatments and care?

aye personally I think this is a bad idea. 1-20 hairs is practically nothing, the average person loses much more than that (i'm even sure you lose more than that daily, you just dont realize it maybe?). Unless it is damaged beyond repair (which i doubt) I would have to advise against cutting, expecially since you already have a years worth of waiting out of the way (depending on the length you're going for). Just my opinion, do what you think is best :)

Uh... You're only losing 1-20 hairs a day? Actually you're probably losing more than that, buddy. "Treating" your hair with oil or whatever isn't going to stop this, it's natural to lose 50-150 hairs a day. I think you'll still have plenty of hairs at the end of the day, if I say so myself.

How about trying Aussie Products on your head instead of "eggs" and "Olive Oil?" Henna??????????????

NO! If your scalp is clean there really shouldn't be any itching. (Perhaps pours are clogged by what you have been or not been using?) Refer to the wonderful set of articles on How to Grow Long Hair by Bill Choisser. If in doubt about this itching, consult with your doctor to rule-out what factors are causing this problem. Good Luck!

Are you only worrieng about losing only 1-20 hairs a day?? This is absolutly NORMAL or better say its not much at all because actually everbody loses more hair a day than just 20, up to 100 is still normal. And if you want long hair, cutting is the worst thing you can do and when you regrow, whatever problems you have now, won't disapear.

As others have said, this is perfectly normal. You just notice it more when the hair is longer.

I wouldn't cut it because then you lose all that length! Your hair probably won't grow any thicker than what it is, that's just genetics. The treatment sounds like a good idea - you'll have the itching problem no matter if your hair is longer or shorter, but your scalp is telling you it needs attention, so keep your hair, but try your treatment - itching is usually due to dryness so it should work well but I've heard that henna may colour your hair.
Cheers, Armin

I believe its my long hair that is getting in the way of any treatment for my scalp. Even when I wash it, its difficult to thoroughly please the scalp with a nice cleaning or treatment because if i try to hard it tends to break hair from their roots. I don't want to cut my beautiful hair but i look at this as a sacrifice for the future to prevent balding. What do you think?

Yep, I know how it is...my hair's quite thick and it's hard to get ANY treatment through to the scalp. The key is to just use a larger quantity (I assume you are talking about a wet treatment here). Keep pouring it on until it sinks through, you'll feel it when it has reached the scalp.
If you're snapping hairs, you're working it in too hard. Be gentle, just lightly massage your scalp.
Also, not sure if any treatment will PREVENT baldness, not the hereditary kind at any rate. It may however milden it.
At any rate, it depends on how much you want to keep/ grow your hair. If you really want it long, do keep it now.
Hope this helps,
Armin

My comments:
1. Hair length has nothing to do with scalp condition, except that longer hair might help draw oil off your scalp and help prevent buildup, thereby making your scalp healthier. I had dandruff all my life until I grew really long hair, and at that time the dandruff vanished.
2. No matter how bad the condition of your existing hair is, I would not recommend cutting it if you want more length. If you shift from the world's worst hair care routine to the world's best, the older hair in bad condition will still give you length and help you get through the awkward stage. When your nice hair gets to where it is itself beyond the awkward stage, then you can trim the bad hair off. (If you don't trim it off, its weaker condition will cause it to soon break off anyway, leaving you with a nice head of hair. That's what happened with me, anyway.)

The Hair loss you describe is nothing - you are probably only noticing it now because shorter hairs are so hard to spot. YOU WONT GO BALD LOOSING 10 hairs a day - hairs grow to replace the hairs you shed, and new hairs grow at a much faster rate than 10 per day.
I have a scalp condition at the moment which is also annoying me, but cutting my hair to treat it was never even mentioned when I went to my doctor to sort it out. I just got a medicated shampoo and I'm sure that with the right advice you'll find a product that will sort out your scalp.
Infact I can give you the name of one called "T-Gel" which is supposed to relieve an itchy scalp. Try treating before you cut!
And I swear you will not go Bald! If anything if the rate of hair loss you describe is accurate, your hair will be getting thicker! Wearing your hair long will not make you go bald - that'll happen with short or long hair!

Thank you so much to everyone for your inputs.
I reconsidered, and will NOT be cutting my hair :).
Instead I will go to the doctor and seek advice for a product to get rid of my itchy scalp problem.
When all is good, i'll post my pic as a appreciation note for everyone.
Thanks again.

You have got to be kidding right?
1) 20 hairs a day is nothing.
2) You don't need to cut your hair to treat your scalp.
3) The scalp treatment you listed is not going to stop you from loosing your hair.
4) You are not loosing your hair anyway.

If I were you, I would try my best to find a way to make it better without having to cut it all off. ONLY ONLY cut your hair as a last resort!
