Trimming Curly Neck Hairs:

I've read a lot of posts from people. Who ask whether or not they should trim the hairs around their neck when they are growing out.
TRUST ME DONT DO IT - The arguement that a blunter cut with fewer layers will be less prone to curling is B.S.
Hair Curls around the neck because it is pushing against your collar, and not necessarily the collar of your shirt.
The only thing that will allow these hairs to grow straight is getting past the collar so they are nolonger restricted or scrunched by your neck and shoulder blades.
The fastest way to do this is to not cut them... trust me... I've learnt from bad experience.

Well I have exactly the same thing (as i mentioned before), where the back hairs tend to curl upwards, although the rest of my hair is straight. I'm happy just to leave it as it is and carry on growing, as i can now rest assured at this comment, cheers.

I think what some of us are saying is that if you have say 3ft. of hair and you notice that your neck hair remains at a couple of inches or is doing the edge-of-the-beard thing where it tapers out across the skin and looks kind of unkept-hairy then trimming that can make it look better if you tie it back and may even help with some of the tangling in that area (depending on your hair type). I wear t-shirts pretty much every day so that shows the hair there isn't curling up because of a collar. But after you have grown your hair out for some time and then get these hairs trimmed it does seem easy to maintain and not so bothersome to let fill in between trims.
I can see that at your length the collar would be an issue and it would be best not to start trimming yet (if at all) until it get much longer.
Small peice of help/advise please

My hair is very similar on top and sides to the picture on the URL below, however the back is a little longer resulting in it curling up at the back quite alot. I don't mind it too much, but I am going for a look similar to this, which i think is achievable for my hair, if only it wasn't for the back. Is there anyway to minimise the curls, without straightening, and, as i am going for this look (I'm basically there, apart from the back), would a small trim at the back be advisable for this?
Thanks in advance for any tips and advice.

Your hair has it's own curl and this length often is a difficult stage. Mine did the same. If you are growing it longer then you just need to tough it out until it gets long enough to bring the curl (wings) back down. If you are going for Tom's look then you may be out of luck unless you go shorter above your curl or find a way to "trim it up".
Keep in mind that this picture of Tom is what we on the board refer to as short hair. It's not a buzzcut but it isn't long yet by any means. I would suggest letting it grow longer than what you have and see how you like it. The problem of hair winging out will subside if you do this and you may find this to be quite agreeable.

Thanks for the advise:) I don't think I will opt for cutting above the curls (even if i't might help achieve this look). The main reason I want a look more similar to this is because i'm going for around 'shoulder length' hair, not maximum length. A look like Cruise in 'The last Samuari' is the length i'm aiming for, and I don't think this is an unachievable look for my type of hair. I just thought that having a cut similar to Cruise when he had it 'shorter' would help get the initial shape for the look in Samuari. I don't know if this is a good theory, but it seems logical. Anyway, I will let grow for another 4 - 5 mounths or so so I can gain more length and see what need doing from there, seeing as I do not plan to grow my hair as long as I know alot of you do.
NB - It may seem as though I am growing my hair for the soul purpose of what I see in films. This is not the case, I just feel that having a look to aim for is a good thing as you can see the progress and maintain a 'look' at the same time (even if it doesn't look exactly as desired).

There are two meanings to "hair around your neck" or "hair at your collar". One meaning is "hair rooted there". THAT is the hair that can look untidy forever, that will never grow long, and that many men may want to cut. The other meaning is hair that is rooted up higher and has just grown down to the neck area. If you are growing your hair out longer, indeed you do not want to cut that hair!
