Since the whole Napster thing, I'm proud to say I'm a FORMER fan of that band. They'll never see another penny from me.
They aren't selling out shows anymore, their latest album has sold about 1/4th to 1/3rd their previous albums - and the band is wondering why? Sheesh! They'll be here next month, tickets have been on sale for a good two months, and plenty of good seats are available. They're even giving away CDs with purchase of tickets to try to sell them.
Metallica is done. It's all downhill for that band from now on.

Technically speaking, any band who walks into the studio for the purpose of producing an album to be sold to the buying public is "selling out". However, since the Napster debacle, I have also become an ex-Metallica fan.

I've got no issues with the whole Napster thing. In fact they had my support. If no one buys any music, there will be NO music! St. Anger was a joke. I don't think it's THAT bad but it's clear that for the last ten years they've been wandering around in a daze. They just seem completely lost.
Anyway, I thought this was a hair forum! ;) They lost their power when they lost their hair!
In the words of Mike Inez (amazing hair) of Alice In Chains: 'Good friends don't let friends get 'Friends' haircuts'.

Statistic show that sales go up if people are allowed to preview the music in advance. While there are other factors that have affected album sales (the economy, same old crap all the time, etc) statistics show that when downloading was at its peak, so were album sales.
Also, the quality of the stuff to download was often not anywhere near that of a CD. In my case, if I heard the music in advance, and I liked it, I always bought the CD. The only other way I'd buy a CD is if a friend had it and I heard it and liked it. So...once all this happened, my friends and I don't download and we also don't buy. I can't remember the last time I bought a major label album.
Also...it goes beyond the whole Napster thing. Metallica was suing anything and anyone that had a name that even remotely resembled Metallica. They sued a furniture store in Texas, a shoe store in Florida, shops and stores in Pennsylvania, Maine, and Missouri. Keep in mind they sued for silly things like "ica" at the end of the name.
That is precisely why I will never support them. It's also why they had a hard time finding a replacement for Newsted. At least ten bassists turned down the offer, some several times.

...liked Metallica in the "olden" days. I think they started going downhill after their Justice album. As far as seeing any good concerts, I haven't been too much of a concert-goer. However, Rob Halford of Judas Priest is my biggest influence on my vocals. I would absolutely love to see them play live since I never have before. But, with noone willing to resign the band, it doesn't seem like they will tour around here any time soon, if at all.

Do you live in the US? Judas Priest (with Halford on vox) are part of Ozzfest this year. They're touring all around the US. They're also recording a new album.

Eh, I don't see how one can be a death metal fan, yet still like Metallica. Especially what they would play on a tour these days.
In any case, I am seeing Symphony X and Queensryche on April 18th.
