a person has 6 inches of hair growth in 1 year, give or take.
how many inches does the awkward stage disappear.

It totally depends on your hair type. If you have straight hair, maybe 10 inches if you have curly hair it could be twice that. Absalom

And also the factor of how tall or short you are. The taller, the longer most likely it will take. A pretty good average is someplace between the first 18 months when things really begin to settle-in and there is enough hair for gravity to bring things under control the best of all. Oh yes, when I mention "someplace between the first 18 months," it generalities you are probably looking 9 months to a year.

There's another line of thought which suggests you can allievate the awkward stage by having maintenance trims every 3-4 months during the first year. These trims should not cut the length (least not the top layers) but focus on shaping your hair so it can be styled easily.
Whilst this will inevitably impact slightly on how long it takes to grow to your desired length, the time taken to get their can be much less awkward.
However, sooner or later you will still find your hair annoying in some way, and at some points you just have to get on with it and let it grow.
