What's a body wave????

My mom told me she's checked me in with her stylist for one this weekend. No debate with my mom! If I argue, she's more likely to get the stylist to give me a buzz cut. But what is it? And why would I need one?

I can make a guess but how long is your hair?
Might be OK - if the stylist is used to long hair: At least its not a barber

My hair is around shoulder length. I usually keep it tied back in a low ponytail. What's your guess?

That was the guess - some sort of perm but too curly.
I would agree with others she is probably do something she thinks will help but you should talk with the stylist and see if she really thinks its right and then see if she will persuade your mom.
Make sure she does not suggest any cutting that will just make any awkwards stage far worse and get your mom really hung up

A body wave is a type of permanent (perm). Hair is put on rods or rollers, chemical solutions are used to break the protein bonds in the hair, and then other solutions are used to neutralize the hair and permanently "set" the hair in the shape given by the rollers/rods. Like any kind of perm, it can be damaging to hair, especially since you have to kind of keep doing it to the new hair growth if you wish to maintain the curl/wave.
Why does your mom want you to have a perm?

Thanks Mary. I don't really want curly hair.
Does it take long to do? How soon will it grow out? How often would I have to have it done?

That's what I don't know. This hasn't been discussed between us. It was just like she told me when she got back from shopping last night that she had checked me in for Saturday. The conversation went like:
Mom: I've made an appointment for you with my stylist this Saturday.
Me: Your stylist... Why? I don't want to get it cut yet anyway. It looks OK.
Mom: It's for a body wave
Me: What's that?
Mom: It gives your hair more body. It'll make it look better. Now don't argue, go and clean up!
and that was the end of it.
My mom doesn't really like me growing my hair but she tolerates it.
I guess I've got to do this to keep her happy. But I don't get why I need it.

Talk to the stylist when you get there and tell him/her your plans for your hair. Dont just let them get into it, and if your mother is there make sure she/he communicates with you and not your mother. But in all honesty it probably will look good in the end!! i mean your mum will want it to look better not worse or she'd have have booked the barber
Oh and make sure she's not tricking you into having it cut off... ie you sit down in the chair an before you know it she/he's just hacked half you hair off! - the more than likely wont be the case but dont stand for it if it is!!!!!

I get perms about 3 times a year and they don't do any damage to my hair. I wash my hair less with a perm, it takes less work to make it look good, and it holds a style better. plus a body wave is the least curly of all perms. it will be fine.

People have all different kinds of hair, and while some people may have no problem at all with perms, from everything I've heard, perms certainly can often damage or dry out hair. I don't think a body perm changes how your hair looks very much, so why would you want to do that yet risk damage from the perm? The only reason I can think of is that because permed hair is weaker, it can be easier to style (assuming you want to spend time styling it.)
I suspect your mother was complaining to her stylist about your hair, and the stylist suggested the body perm. But as often happens, I doubt the stylist was thinking in terms of somone who plans to keep growing their hair longer and not keep it in a shorter style (so that over time the perm would get cut off). The stylist may have just been thinking of a way to get more business, since perms are one of the more expensive things they do.
If I were you, I'd see if there's any way your mother would reconsider. It probably won't be terrible or as bad as a bad cut, but it hardly seems like a good idea. Maybe you could get the opinion of some other stylist and tell your mother?

Wow I'm surprised your mom would make you get a full body wave without asking you. You will probably be in a shock when you see yourself decked out in rollers! :)
Anyway good luck and I hope it looks good.
