Bobs for Babes and Guys - Magazine Alert

For some reason it seems that second to very long hair, many of us are attracted to the bob syle. Luckily, the sytle is returning, and there are several magazines featuring such styles out on the stands right now.
A great one is "Short Hairstyles" (well, short for girls, anyway...), hte November issue. Its cover has a black background with hot-orange and white lettering, and features a girl with a funky red haired bob. The issue is the "BOB ISSUE!"
It has a lot of great pictures, ALL in glossy color. And, for those of us who wish society would accept long (and angled) bobs on guys, there is a teaser image of fairly long (chin-length, and layered) bob on a GUY! See page 42. (I know that "BobbedGuy" will appreciate it--show that one to your wife!) I could not find that image on the web, and my scanner never came back alive since a motherboard/W98 upgrade, so I cannot squirt it up to the site.
I've taken a few images of me in my best bob wig. If anyone is into that I could upload them to this site.

HisHair,
Thanks a lot for the information. I am going to go get that mag right away as I need a trim soon and might want to do something just a little different to my bob. It would be way cool for boys with bobs and longer hair to become mainstream. But I love my bobbed hair so I will keep it whether it is mainstream or not because I like it and I think it looks good.

Want to have long hair, but can't because of texture and thickness. You mentioned your 'bobbed' wig. Where can a man purchase one or a good long hair wig? I've tried finding them on the net and the caps on most wigs are made for women - too small for a man. This may seem strange, but would like to know what I'd look like and feel it laying on my shoulders and back! Thanks for any info!

Buying them online is probably risky, regarding the size problem. There seem to be a number of good online stores--wigs.com and
wigsforless.net. I ran into one that had some estimates of head size on each model listing.
You can always get up the nerve and go into a wig shop, as I did. I remember buying a ponytail to add to my own on my first visit--I think the manager of the store even put it on me (but I am not sure). I did not go back for a couple of years, maybe, and when I did she was still running the store. I cannot remember now if I bought my clip-on hair extension first of a wig, but either that time or the next I looked at some wigs and she asked if I wanted to try it on. I did so and she has been gracious about it since. I've bought several more and tried on others. These have included several bobs, a mid-back length with bangs, and a shoulder length wig. I've tried them on both in a private booth and at a counter that runs along the wall, with and without other employees and customers around.
I cut my teeth early on this sort of thing, buying a frosted bob wig at one of the first discount stores (I think it was called Grand Way), in the late sixties. Later I ordered a very long wig from the Frederick's of Hollywood catalog. It was just called a 'belly dancer's wig' as I recall, and was either $50 or $100 at the time (mid 70's). I recently found where I had packed it away and took it to the store for a detangling and cleaning. When I went back (wearing a bob wig), I wore it out--fabulous, butt-length, no bangs. It looks very real, and I went out of the store and went to a mall to walk around. I had a bookstore clerk tell me I had "beautiful hair", so I guess it passes! The wig store manager said she thinks it is still sold as the "Godiva" (see www.wigs.com--they carry it). It has a good large cap and fits well. I think you would like it.
I've visited the shop a few times lately. I first went in a few weeks ago and the manager was not in, so I did not try on anything (I feel comfortable with her and she is not hesitant to fit something on me--after all, I am a repeat customer). I was wearing my best bob that I had bought from her previously, but I noticed a bob without bangs (my favorite), that looked great. So, I just left my long wig to be cleaned (mentioned above), and came back a week later. I asked to try on the bob but was disappointed that its cap is too tight. It is the Revlon "Jill", I think (search web for Revlon wigs--wigs.com does not have it, I think the other place did). So I just had her put on my cleaned wig and off to the mall... Another week later I returned and bought a short bob and another wig I had seen in there--a red one close to the recent style of Dana Scully in X-files. She even did bit of trimming of some bangs for me on it. I wore it out and got some interesting looks at the McDonald's drive through! It looks good and fits good. I also left my mid-back for a cleaning, to pick up (and wear out to the mall) this coming week.
It takes some nerve at first but if you are lucky enough to find a nice person running the shop it can work great! This particular shop is one of a chain (Chic Wigs, in some malls and shopping centers). Otherwise you have to risk a bad fit ordering on the web(I may *still* get tha Jill anyway--it's great in "chocolate").
I took photos on each of these excursions that I could post on this site.
Good luck!

Thanks for the help. I'll have to go shopping (net wise). Still a little self conscious to go to a store. Thought maybe there were longhaired men's wigs somewhere. Would love to see your pictures. Bet you look good.

Made an error -- the bangless bob is Revlon's Kriss. See it at

Yes! Post some pictures. All you guys with bobs, please! How
are people going to accept that a bob is a valid male hairstyle if
they don't get to see it? You too, bobbedguy. Post it under a
fake name if you don't want to be recognized. A bob is a great
men's hairstyle but because people don't see it very often on a man,
most people still think of it as women-only. Yes, send pictures!

I would be more than happy to post some pictures but my significant other doesn't want my face all over the web and it would almost certainly happen seeing that there are so few out there now. But if I knew how to attach here I have one that I can put out here. How do you attach here??

Looks like you first upload your file using the following
http://the-light.com/mens/public/code/upload.html
Then post a message giving the following as the "Optional Image URL"
http://the-light.com/mens/public/your_file_name.
(Substituting the name of your file for "your_file_name". Filenames
are case sensitive and require the extension. e.g. .jpg)

I looked at this and it is way to complicated for me. Can I e-mail the picture to someone so that they can post it?
