Yesterday somebody told me I should get the back of my hair relaxed so it would lay down better and not flip up. But I don't even know what relaxing does. Should I get it relaxed???? I don't know. Need answers.

The stylist puts a base solution in your hair that chemically straightens it. It's pretty much permanent for a long time (like 6 months).

i've asked two salons and they both said it only lasts for 4 - 6 weeks. if it were 6 months i would go for it

Relaxing is definitely damaging to your hair. You should do proper maintanence and follow an appropriate treatment regime after relaxing (which should be adviced by the hairdresser who did it). Most people leave their hair alone and returned to normal routines and found that their hair was severely damaged after the relax "wear out".
Also, proper maintenance and treatment could make the "straight effect" last longer than that was done without.
Good luck!

Lighting some candles, turning off the lights, listening to "Dark Side of the Moon" on headphones while taking a bubble bath... now *that's* relaxing! :-)
