...I hear that in WARMer climates, longhair is not well tolerated or liked.
...and that people in COOLer places will accept it better.
...Then there are SMALL towns & cities & BIG ones...

How would you rate the Place you live on the 'acceptance' scale?

Well, I am told that Minneapolis is the coldest METROPOLITAN city in the world, and let me tell you there are A LOT of longhairs and beards here. It seems to be very well tolerated especially by some of the major corporations here. If you go downtown Minneapolis especially around the American Express buildings you'll see longhairs (waist length)all around.
St. Paul seems to have fewer long hairs. The rural areas have a nice mix of shoulder length hair.
I had a buzz cut last winter for the first time and damn near froze to death....thus time to let it grow...I'll never do that again.

I worked in the Twin Cities in the summer of 1966, and St. Paul was a lot more conservative then. I see some things change very slowly. :-)

Yeah, really. One day last winter I was standing with my partner out in front of our house barefoot, wearing just jeans and a T-shirt. A guy walked down the street bundled up with a wool cap, scarf, and heavy jacket, like he was about to take on a snowstorm. I commented that to see me and him you'd think we were on different planets, not on the same street. My partner said, "I've seen the guy before; he is completely bald. He is probably COLD!"
Read any hiking book, and you'll see that people lose a large percentage of their heat through their heads. It's even an adage among hikers, "If your feet are cold, put on a hat."

For those of you who have never been to the Minneapolis area...it's not unusual to go for weeks at -40 degrees farenheit, with wind gusts pushing it to -75. (Sorry no good at the Celcius conversion)
Put it this way we get warnings not to be outside for more than a minute with flesh exposed as it will freeze.
And no it's not an old wives tail: NEVER lick metal in the winter, it will stick!
Thank God for hair!

Well, a little bit of exaggeration (for example, the record low temperature of the Twin Cities is -34, and blizzards usually only last a few days), but that's OK. For your Farenheit to Celsius conversion ease, you should know that -40 is the same in both systems!
Tongues will stick to metal at 0F or even higher. Just try licking your freezer. No wait! Don't do that. Freeze a spoon or something and stick it to your tongue.

Greenleaf,
I lived in Minneapolis for 6 years. The coldest night in the entire 6 years (1994-2000) was Feb. 2, 1996, when it was -37 F (-38.3 C) -- the "windchill factor", which I think was invented by Minnesotans to claim ever colder temperatures, was -70 F. It did go for weeks without going over 0 F (-18 C), but it has only gone below -40 F a few times in history (I looked this up, because the weather there is very interesting). I am from Canada, and moved from there to Minneapolis, and I kept waiting for the supposed "cold" weather to arrive. It is not the coldest "metropolitan" city, as Winnipeg and Edmonton are colder (and isn't 1 million people enough to make a metropolis, or don't Canadians count?). Also, the Mall of America is not the largest mall in the world, the West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton is. People from Minnesota drive me nuts --- they feel that they have to the the "bestest" in everything, when in reality, they're not.

Where in Canada are you from? One thing I find interesting is that Vancouver and Austin, TX have either identical or nearly identical record lows, even normal lows for the winter.
I lived in Saskatchewan for a while and shoveled my neighbor's walk when it was 40 below. I got frostbite, too. I really shouldn't have been out at all. At the time I was living in Swift Current. I was a member of the band, and we had a massed band competition in Saskatoon. I was amazed how much colder it was in Saskatoon than in Swift Current. When we got there, there were several inches of frost (I guess this is what they call hoar frost) all over the ground, power lines, etc. It's not really at all like snow, since it's attached to the ground and grows up in little tree shapes.
On the subject of cold, I remember my parents arguing once over whose childhood home was colder. My mother's childhood home was south of Swift Current, not far north of the US border. My father's childhood home was in Gera, Germany. During the argument, each one of them claimed to have more than a foot thick of ice on their bedroom window!
When Greenleaf brought up the subject in the first place, he indicated that long hair was a definite plus in these conditions. That is probably true if there is no wind, but I wonder how much difference hair really makes in gale force winds. Now that is something Minnesota definitely has.

According to "The rights of students" by the ACLU, school dress codes tend to be upheld in the "sun-belt" states (Southern & Western United States), therefore long hair tends to be more tolerated in the Northern & Eastern United States.
Also, notice that some sun-belt state prisons (in Texas & California, for example) are apparently intolerant of long hair on [male] prisoners. Lyn : St. Paul seems to have fewer long hairs. Re: Minnesota--belated response In Reply to: Re: the Place YOU Live...-Minnesota posted by Greenleaf on September 05, 2002 at 10:37:14: I live in a small, blue collar town a couple miles south of St. Paul. There's a lot of bikers here, and long hair and facial hair are very much accepted. One of our city councilmen is well-known for his handlebar mustache (he almost always wins the annual mustache contest held during my town's summer festival). My town abuts against a stereotypically uptight suburb, so there is some interesting culture clash--my husband has been pulled over by the police in the suburb for no other reason than his shagginess. Also, when he worked at a high school in the suburb, some parents made nasty comments about how someone like him (I assume they meant his hair, not his mild handicap... if they meant his handicap, then they're worse yuppie scum than I thought) shouldn't be allowed to work around kids. So how well long hair is accepted in Minnesota all depends on location. BTW, I don't recall anyone claiming the Mall of America was the largest in the world... hence the name Mall of America, not Mall of North America or Mall of the World.

San Francisco? A big West Coast city with cool weather (it seldom hits seventy [21C] in the summertime) - almost everyone accepts longhairs. This city has, of course, certainly seen its share of hippies. :-)
We longhairs are still in the minority, though, just like everywhere else.
Having long hair here is great in one way, especially if you have a beard, too. Together, that much hair keeps you just warm enough you seldom have to wear a coat outside, rather than having almost always to. On the other hand, it is usually very windy here on a peninsula exposed to the ocean, and that means most of the time you'll want to tie your mane down.

Here in Belgium there's not much discrimination against longhairs.
We are in my opinion well accepted.
I changed from job in march this year with a past midback tail , and my new boss had nothing against it.

Even Manhattan as well has none! I've been to many different states, and I must say, I think NY ranks #1 as the state with the least long haired guys! I wish more guys on LI would grow their hair...instead like you said, you've got guys walking around with those LAME "buzz cuts"! 9 because middle aged and older people might give you a strange look. I refer mainly to "weird" haircuts rather than longhair, which is more like 9.5.

This is one of the most conservative places I've ever been. Not only is long hair looked at as it is a sign of Satan worship or drug culture or you belong to the Manson family, no other alternative culture types are acceptable either. Anything on either side of "normal" is looked down upon by most. There are some accepting souls here, but few and far between.
This is buzz-cut, suit and 'power' tie, sports rule!, bible thumping, vote Republican, meat-eating, drive an SUV, listen to Rush Limbaugh, "we love our neighborhood association meetings", "I wanna be just like everyone else", Nazi land. God Bless America.

I live in Santa Fe, New Mexico (USA -- many American fail to realize it is an American state -- thus the "New Mexico USA" on the license plates), and the climate here is nothing like people imagine. Everybody imagines it like Arizona (to the immediate west) with hot deserts and cactus everywhere. Well, here in Northern New Mexico, it is more like Colorado, with snow in the winter and LOTS of snow in the mountains; it often goes down to -18C at night even in Santa Fe. Summers are hot (often around 33C), but always low humidity. It is the perfect place for long hair --- the hair keeps the summer sun at bay, and the low humidity makes it easy to manage. Also, the fact that nearly a quarter of men here have long hair --- from all walks of life, from professionals like me, to the Native Americans (which comprise about 20% of the population around here), to the Hispanic New Mexicans, to former hippies who flock here for the culture, to retirees. I certainly don't feel out of place here with my mid-back hair and earrings. Actually, to be out of place in Santa Fe would be quite a feat -- though there always seems to be somebody pushing the limits.
I consider New Mexico to be an island in the sea of conformity comprising Texas, Arizona, Utah and Colorado. The politics and culture in these places is polar opposite to New Mexico.

I dunno, Houston (where I grew) is pretty accepting, but, then, it is a port city, so has kinda lost much of its texas-ness.... In fact, it is getting to be dominated by "minorities." Not a bad thing, at all. It is a richly cultural city. Quite cool to walk on a street at any given time and hear twenty opr so languages spoken...
Of course, now I'm at university in Huntsville (home of the death sentance!), but, being a college town, they are also pretty accepting here. I will conceed that the smalltown folk think I'm weird with the long curls.... But, then, most of my family is smalltown folk, and they *do* love to joke with me about it. *rolls eyes*
I get "ma'am" a lot, but it doesn't bother me. I like watching a waiter or such squirm when they realize i am *not* a woman.... Okay, so i have an evil streak.......

With the intolerance in warmer climates, it's no wonder why there is so much turmoil in third-world tropical countries such as Latin America, Caribbean, Africa, the Mid-East, the Orient, Indonesia, etc. You can say that the heat's on, both literally and figuratively! Beware of other people; people kill each other in these "HOT" countries.

I have heard that Scandinavia is very tolerant. You can say that the people are COOL there! (Pun intended!) Other people leave you alone. There may be a high suicide rate, but that could be due to depression brought on by lack of day-light in the winter.
