The Bitter End?

Not that I'm trying to encourage it, I'm curious as to what the majority of answers would suggest if I asked long-haired males (including the long-hairs in progress) when they thought they'd loose the locks. Mind you, I'm just as enthusiastic about being a long-hair for life as many of you, but do you feel there is EVER a time or circumstance under which a longhair should do away with their pride? I know, you're initial reaction will likely be one of "Never!"... But consider this: What if you lived to be 65 years old and all of the hair on the top of your head had lost itself to balding, so all you were essentially left with was a ponytail that clashes with your otherwise bald head (Try to invision Paul Heymen, the owner of what was arguably the best wrestling fed in North America, ECW)? Or, what if you ended up resembling Hulk Hogan with age (And I mean that with respect to his hair, or lack thereof)? Would you just do away with your hair all-together, or do your damndest to retain those final scraps, however desperate they may leave your appearance? Or what some hooligan snuck up on you and stuck a wad of gum on one side of your hair: If you couldn't remove the gum, would you only cut off the quarter of hair that had been ruined by the gum, or would you do away with it all so the length would be consistent with re-growth? In other words, do you ever foresee yourself going back to the plain and mundane to react according to the effects of serious balding (or even something as obscure as the gum episode I described)?
Bitter End? Well...

after taking down the guy with the chewing gum...
I can't decide...I CAN'T DECIDE...
O, I can't even pull out a white hair when I find one because I'm
thinking: "That poor thing, I can't end its life."
I saw a bald man with a nice Tail and it still looked good on him.
It took so long...It would be wrong to just put an end to it...
I'm fond of it...though my it can't think...my ever-present companion...
Should I just say, "Goodbye"?
I can't...

LOL. I find that my resolution pretty much mimics that which I've read in the way of responses thus far. It WOULD be a real waste to chop off a beautiful ponytail in the event that you lost most of your hair to an ungodly baldspot. I applaud people like Paul Heymen: People like JR in the WWE try to portray him as the most repulsive, manipulative man out there (They assert a lot of this to the way he looks), but you've got to give the man credit for asserting individuality. Like him, I'd rather "die on my feet than live on my knees" (To quote a song by the Skatenigs).
As for the possibility of a gum mishap... Now that I think about it, that might not be so bad, actually. I would probably just chop off the one side that the hooligan's puerily ways had exacerbated and keep the rest of my hair intact. You can actually develop a pretty unique (if radical) look this way: Looking through the liner booklet of an old Marilyn Manson album, one of the bandmembers really stood out for having adopted this look (This was just after the Spooky Kids days, so I think the member I speak of must've been either Madonna Wayne Gacy or Sarah Lee Lucas).
Isn't there....

something you could put in your hair to remove gum? Like a shampoo or a home remedy perhaps?
Of course there is!

Rubbing vaseline into your hair where the gum is will loosen its grip and allow you to slide it right off, or so ive read.

And to get Vaseline out (incredibly difficult -- I know this from researching Nix-resistant lice), use peanut butter.

It comes out readily with shampoo.

I would have to say that I'll probably be that guy with the bald spot, and the gray hair still sporting a very long ponytail. Heck, the only reason I grew out my undercut was so that I'd have something in case my currently thinning hair decides to call it quits on top.

The horseshoe ponytail is a cool look.
I suppose if I had acid poured on my head, and it burned a bunch of weird ass bald spots that looked like a map of the Pangea Supercontinent, then yes, I would probably cut the few wisps that remain, and be a scar headed baldie.

Obviously the best time to let it go is when you notice significant thinning/balding/receding. Long hair on a non-full head looks awful.
I'm 20 now and I think I'll keep my hair for at least another few years.. and even if i never start to lose it I think it'll come off before i'm 25 - change is good, and besides, you can always grow it back.

Since I am 2 months into my 70th year(Oh! to see 65 again)perhaps I can help. My hair is just past my shoulder blades and I have thought about this question. So far I have not lost much hair (I have convinced myself) so I'm still growin' it as fast as I can. My conclusion, after seeing a fair number of other old farts with bald tops and pony tails of varying lengths, is that I will NOT cut it off, but just keep growing it, the longer the beter--size does matter!

Something happened to the rest of my message. I had said that I became convinced for sure that I was right after seeing the bio of Ben Franklin last night (Tue)on PBS. The other half will be on tonight (Wed). The actor and the many old paintings and drawings they showed all looked wonderful even though he got the point of looking like a cue ball on top. No doubt in my mind--I'll keep growing it.

This decision was reinforced last evening(Tue.) after watching the bio of Ben Franklin on PBS. The actor who played him looked really good--most of the time his hair was loose. Also they had a lot of old paintings and drawings of him. By middle age he was a cue ball on top but kept what was left at or below shoulder length. Check it out tonight.
