I've worn large hoops before. Frankly, they're an annoyance, as they get in the way of my usual activities...and it only takes one good tug to make you regret ever putting them in.
I now wear a pair of 8-gauge rings. They look rather like hematite, and each has a silver ball at the join. They're distinctive, but not wholly outlandish...enough that others definitely notice I'm wearing earrings, but not enough to make them wonder what sort of radio reception I get.

I would say go for it. Large hoops and dangles look good with
long hair.

MY DEAR MOSIAC--
With a moniker like yours I would be especially cautious about making gender jokes. Do you no realize that hair and earrings are social conventions and do not have anything to do with gender. Those of us who chose to march a little outside the jail of cultural conformity can wear anything we like and still be the gender we are by nature or the gender we aspire to be by cultural definition.
Mosiac is used in biology to refer to inconsistence of chromosomal makeup. Perhaps your cells are not consistent and some are XY, Some XXY and Some XYY.
Please do not be abusive. Sometimes our jokes fail, but we should be very careful to ask whether our jokes have the potential to hurt, or to inforce conformity to unnecessary cultural codes.

My dear Mosaic,
You truly are limited in your inability to distinguish a typo for illiteracy. Moreover you are morally and ethically impaired, in your aggressive and assaultive verbal relationships with others. Sticks and stones will break your bones, but your psychological outlook will destroy you.

... All totally false :) I just think serious people like you need to loosen up and stop trying to impress people with your 'superhero' tendencies. My psychological outlook' is totally different offline. Trying to hide illiteracy with a typo... it didn't work. You typed 'Mosiac' twice I believe. Kind of coincidental that it happened twice I think...
Lots of love,
Mosiac. lol

It might help avoid confusion if you attach an emoticon to the end of future "jokes". Remember, humor is much more difficult to detect when all we can see are words.
;)
As for me being a little he-bitch... hmmm... drat! My "witty comeback" well is dry...
Ah, well...

I hate hoops, and will never wear them. I own a sterling silver Ankh, with Egyption hyroglyphics etched into the metal, on both sides of the Ankh. It was a Christmas present from one of my cousins, nearly 10 years ago, and is the ony earring I own.
I'm at work as I write this, but will post a picture of it when I get home.

My hair is the same length as yours, and yes I wear earrings, one in each ear (I'm a conservative kind of a guy!). I think most earrings usually seen on guys are B-O-R-I-N-G!!! I wear mostly dangles, some of them quite outrageous! I have 1 pair of white gold thin hoops - 2.75" around (Wouldn't wear hoops any smaller!). About 1/4 of my earring collection (54 to date!) are studs, the rest (excepting the above mentioned hoop pair) are dangles. They look great with long hair.
And in reply to Mosaic - I also wear "skirts": Utilikilts!

If you tell me you got the idea from watching Patrick on The Screensavers, I may very well die from laughing so hard!
I'd get one, myself, if they didn't cost so damn much.

I'm also a "skirt" wearer. Wear the traditional kilt most every day. My suggestion is to check out eBay. Sometimes you'll find a used kilt (either traditional, or a Utilikilt) that's reasonable. I'd stay away from the somewhat cheap new ones (below $100), though. BTW: nice pics. I do usually wear a scrunchy to hold my hair in place, but, also do the hairbow from time to time. Depends on my mood at the time, and where I'm going.

Nope, I've never even SEEN that program! I came to skirt wearing through my Greek Dancing - I wear the traditional Greek Foustanella, or male skirt. Liked the look and liked the comfort. Found Utilikilts, I was one of their very first customers!

COOL! Only one of my ears [the left] is pierced, but I do have a cool Halloween earring. It's a spider with skulls that hang down on chains. The spider part rests against the ear.

I have had my ears pierced and have been wearing hoops for about 2 years. I love them and think they look great with longhair. I have all differnt sizes from 1/2" to 2", although I don't wear the big ones that often because I guess I'm alittle to selfconscious. Feeling them move in your ears is way cool too.
What size hoops did you get?

Why would anyone get their ears pierced in the mall by some pimple nosed kid with one of those dirty guns??? Damn, if you want to get anything pierced, you should get it done by a professional piercer with clean needles that know what they are doing.

I had my ear pierced at a Spencer's Gifts store, in a shopping mall, when I was 18. The woman was very knowledgable, told me what to expect before piercing it, and told me how to keep my ear clean while the hole healed. She wiped my ear lobe with rubbing alchohol, and used a sterilized "stud" earring, attached to a piercing gun, to create the hole.
I felt a slight pinch, followed by a brief, mild sting, as the needle went through my ear. It was really quite an experience; one I've never regretted.

My point is those guns are very dirty. I know this as I have had many piercings done over my life and I am very knowledgeable in this area. You were very lucky as those guns are very dirty. The best way to get one's ears pierced is to go to a professional piercer. Yes, it is more but far more worth it.

And where might one, who's looking to get their ear pierced, find a professional piercer?

They are everywhere! I agree with Tattooedsean; piercing guns are not a good idea. They can easily spread disease, and are more painful and the piercing takes longer to heal compared to being pierced by a needle. The needle sounds more scary, but it's not. I know; I had my left ear pierced with a gun many, many years ago before I knew better, 5 years ago I had my right ear pierced with a needle at 14 gauge -- no pain, and it healed in a week! I have since stretched them somewhat to 6 gauge (I have had them to 2 gauge, but have since let them shrink down). I definitely prefer the gauge earrings --- they look much more substantial and "manly". I hate the large dangly hoops.
