Dreadlocks

I've been looking at some dread lock pics and some look fairly cool. I was wondering, is it safe (i.e do they burn or put anything that isnt reversable in your hair?) If anyone knows, let me know.

To the best of my limited knowledge it IS safe.........just keep them clean. Have never read of "burning" while they are being done, but wax is apparently used to help lock them in place so that the hair will automatically lock tighter and "Dread itself" as it grows out from the scalp. Once you have Dreads, you cannot reverse what you have. All that can be done is have them cut off leaving you with about 1/2" of hair on your head to start-up a different style if you change your mind. Look on the internet for all the info. Good luck.

Yes, PLEASE keep them clean...every time I hear the word "dreadlocks", I think of a story my stepmom told me. I think I've posted it before, but I'll do it again.
Anyway, my stepmom is a hairdresser, and this guy came in one time with dreadlocks who wanted them cut off. As she cut them off, she could see a ring of fungus inside each one...I had to keep from getting sick when she told me. My head itches just thinking about it!
So, just keep them in mind, and remember that once you get them done, if you don't want them anymore, you're going to have to cut them off.

Hey Jenn!
I have seen so many fabulous Dreads..........and so many miserable looking ones. Yes! As with ANY Hairstyle, being "clean" is of the utmost importance. Fungas? NO-WAY with a guy who takes pride and care of himself. A few weeks ago on a bus I witnessed a most astounding gentleman who had Dreads about waist length! Those "Dreads" on THAT person look fantastic! I DO think however that anyone really serious about having really great Dreadlocks should have the initial set-up done by a professional and pay the price. Trying to do it yourself or having a friend do it could easily make a mess of you fast. But this person with nice clean Dreads waist length seemed to be being eyed by everyone.......and for good reason. EVERYBODY on that bus was looking at him! He was clean, polite, had a nice smile and was entertaining some children who seemed to love him. I rather think this did two things: Commanded utter respect for him as a person from the others on board. Also, they were actually in awe (at least I think) of those fantastic Dreads...........the likes of which one rarely sees. It almost seemed like the other passangers wanted his autograph or something. The whole episode was very refreshing.

Although very cool, dreads are also very permanent. I was thinking about them too unless I saw you had to cut them out if you ever got tired of them.
I got all my info from the link at the bottom. I do know that they are nearly impossible to take out after about one week of the wax already in your hair. Also, it takes about three inches of hair to equate into an inch of dreaded hair. So unless unless you have long hair to begin with, it's going to look a tad silly.
Dreads are cool though, so I hope you give it some thought.

Dreads are indeed cool, not for everyone, but cool. A while back I was having a tough time deciding whether or not to get dreads, so I decided to put one in. I put in in behind my ear, in about 8 inches of growth. It's a natural process e.g. no harsh chemicals, but it is indeed permanent. I've decided to just keep the rest of my hair "plain" (it's really really curly) and wait for it to get longer. But I like my one dread though. I named him "Hubert".
About the guy who spent eighty bucks for dreads, it's not something you have to pay someone to do, you can do it yourself.
Ah well, keep thinking about it, and remember, you can always do dreads later on, but you can't just go back after you have them. . ..
