I'm in the exact same boat as you and have the same question. (My hair was a bit longer than a crew cut but I've been growing mine for about 3 months now.) Do you just let it all grow out or do you cut it somewhere along the way?

Well what kind of hair types do you guys have? Tom Cruise has hair that is very thick and straight.

My hair is straight and not very thick but it feels like it is getting thicker if that means anything to you. I want to know whether to cut parts of it at a certain point or just keep letting it grow. If you have any advice please share it.

Let it grow to that length and see if it lays that way. His hair is layered, and blow dried (it looks like it was anyhow).
If it doesn't lay like that once it's that length, you'll have to let it grow at least an inch past that length and have it layered.

well, you'll be glad to know that he has a new movie with the same type of hair, but a bit longer coming out soon..."the last samauri" i believe is the name of it.
anyway, you need to let your hair grow! leave it alone for close to a year or so...his bangs are a bit shorter and he has some soft layers around his face, but that's it.
it will help if you have hair similar to his....relatively thick, and straight. if not, then products will have to be added relative to your hair type.
good luck. that is a great style.
