just retired from the army...

Just retired from the military and want to work my way toward a ponytail. Problem is - I have no idea how to go about it. What guidance do I need to give the person who cuts my hair? What kind of cut should I ask for?
I know these questions may sound kind of silly, but keep in mind that I haven't had to deal with this subject for the last 20 years! ;-)
Thanks,
Rick

Well, I'm 19 and I would have liked to have long hair since 14, 15 or 16, even before. Anyway I can't go back in time, so I guess I know how you feel, with beeing able until now. Until today I recieved confirmation that I won't have to give my hair up for the military and I'm very happy about it. Anyway, if you weant an honest opinionm Don't trim, and if you do, make it very seldom. You might need about 2 years to have ALL your hair in the pony. I haven't cut and I'm happy. Don't surrender valuable inches to barbers unless you have split ends. Having frequent trims is the best way to make your quest longer and making the awckward stage longer. Its up to you to delay your pony every time you trim, or simply accept a funny hairdo until you grow out. You can always use gel or pomades. If you want faster growing hair you can try hair supplements that you take in the morning and at night. Basically you have 3 options that have reported serious results. Anyway if you are already in your genetic maximum, you can't increse your rate. To know if it works, you need at least a month of constantly taking the supplements to see if they work for you.
Options:
1- Hair Formula 37.... its pricey but has reported hair growth of about an inch per month, double than normal.
2- Combine Biotin and Fo Ti- You can get them at GNC, simply overdo the dose.
3- Hair and Nails(correct me if wrong). Its also available at GNC.
My personal suggestion is try the cheap ones first and if you see they work switch to Formula 37. Good luck. You'll find very helpful guys in here, everybody is supportive and will answer all your questions. Just remember about the 2 week rule. I you want to cut your hair, wait 2 weeks to see if you change your mind. cutting takes a minute, growing takes months or years.

I guess you meant bout me and getting rid of a haircut. Well, I got a medical exam and they saw a problem in one eye and I was declared useless for the army so I make no military service and keep my hair.

Rick:
I am a 42 year old school teacher. I let my hair grow out for the first time in my life beginning Dec. of 2001. I wear it to work now in a ponytail. Just stop getting it cut. You don't need to tell the person cutting your hair anything, because you simply stop getting it cut. That's all. And then, you wait. Refer to Bill Choiser's essays on long hair. They are very good. They detail what you will be going through. I read them several times over the last year. Very helpful, and this list is, too. Good luck,
Robert

Rick -
Do what I did, when I got out of the Army, I let my hair grow, Since you are starting out with short hair, and ideally all the same or close to the same length, your hair will grow in rather nicely. Hair grows at about 1/2" inch per month, however, I pushed my hair growth rate up to 1 inch per month, by exercising daily, eating properly and taking hair growth as well as an all around vitamins.
The hair vitamin that I find works best for me is: Shen Min.
Fell free to email me at may51mike@hotmail.com if you wish further
input.
Congratulations on your retirement.

This should keep your hair looking neat, until it is long enough to fit into a ponytail.
