mullets?

I have a question for you guys. I currently have shoulder length hair- all one length. However, a few years ago I had what some might consider a "slight mullet" My hair was short in front and the back just touched past the collar. It was pretty conservative looking though. I was curious to know when you think mullets went out of fashion. My opinion is mullets were perfectly acceptable until about 1996. But by 1997, it was out of fashion. Of course, anyone can do anything they want with their hair. And personally, I LIKE mullets, even though I dont have one anymore. I am just curious as to the YEAR when people thought mullets were "uncool?" What do you think?

i think mullets went out by early to mid 90's... i maintained one myself intil '96- got sick of stylists who wouldn't leave the back alone as instructed & decided to just grow it out. the final traces of the mullet still exist in the final 6 inches or so of my length are pretty sparse. i think if the style is done right it can look very good- as long as the top & sides aren't too short and the layering flows into the back.

j.s.,
i agree with you.... i think they *can* look good if cut well...i have never been a fan of the extreme mullet kinds of cuts (i.e. the old billy ray cyrus look) but long layers looks incredible on some people! the "all-one-length" mode of thinking that is sometimes dominant here, just doesn't work for everyone...although it too, looks incredible on some.
i was all about the mullet in the 80's...left it in the 90's for more of the one length look, and have now, kinda gone in-between. and people compliment my hair just about every day. so i am very thankful.
mjtoo 8-)

For the most part mid 90's I would say although you still see the models showing up with mulletts each year. Last year Two of the big design houses had all their models in them. I work in a tourist town and can tell you it is still alive and well. Many guys still have one. Including me :)

I'm not trying to bash you but I never liked mullets and remember all through the 80's watching the jocks who thought they were real cool with their mullets and earring in the left ear. I too think that it's great when you do your own thing, whatever it is, but these guys didn't do if for themselves but to fit in. Mullets to me were a start on long hair but it never went beyond that start. Someone with a mullet never grew it longer. It was like just enough for them to feel wild but not long enough to get bad reactions from their families and friends, etc.
I think that opinions on mullets have always been pretty diverse. Lots of people never liked them and others always liked them. If cool is what is considered popular culture then that is a rough way to judge anything because it changes so often and covers so much ground. Maybe some models here and there wore mullets but I think that overall the mullet was considered pretty low fashion even if it did get pretty widespread. Cool to some isn't cool to others.
Just an honest look at it.

I wore a mullet most of the time between the age of 5 and 12. It was when I was in elementary school. 1985 to 1992. Lol.

A mullet used to be all I thought I could really do with my hair with as thick as it is. But it was the thickness in those days that made the top and sides look really big and uneven with the back growing out seemingly thinner. So for years after that I just kept short layered haircuts untill I did do the undercut scater thing a couple of times where the hair came down a little over my ears and past my eyes. But now, within the last year I have become totally determined that all my hair will someday look like Johnny Depps hair in the attached pic.

They were definitely in style until at least 1994 or so, when like Hair Religion said, even the jocks were wearing them. I remember a time when all the follower types all kind of cut their mullets at once, but I can't remember the exact year. I still see more than a few mullets around, and I have no problem with them. My friend had his hair tucked behind his ears the other day and some idiots drove by and yelled "MULLET!" It's such a trend now to hate mullets, it makes me like them that much more.
As for myself, I had the total Joe Elliott mullet, short bangs and over the ear but pretty long in the back, until around 1991, when I grew it all out. For the time, the mullet was a great transition from short to long.

A historical note: The "mullet" style was worn by most men in the Estruscan armies and by many Greek and Roman men during the Greek and Roman empires. Straight cut bangs, short on the sides and longer in back. Look at a couple of drawings, statues or vases from the period. There are probably examples of this type of haircut in other cultures thru the ages as well.
Just goes to show that hair has had many styles and shapes throughout history and begs the question: Why does anyone even care what length someone elses hair is?
At this point, it's all been done, even the brightly colored hair. That was done by the Celts in Germany before the middle ages. They used lime to whiten and straighten their hair and then put plant dyes on it to make it blue and red. They went into battle naked with blue faces and hair standing on end. This usually presented quite a scary picture to the armies of the day.
Now, I guess, it would look like a bunch of wild rockers run amuck. Hmm, wonder what kind of grief I'd get if I wore a giant beehive and powdered it white, much like the French did at one point?
