Why did you grow it?

It seems that many of you derive your inspiration for longhair from musicians and/or wrestlers. It got me wondering: why does a guy choose to "buck the trend" and grow his hair long?
To emulate a famous person? To piss off his parents? To symbolically say to society, "I don't care what you think of me."?
What was your reason?
My reason was to please my partner. He likes long hair and this is an easy thing to give to him.

Here is why I let my hair grow
First time: Hey, how would I look like with long hair?
*haircut*
Second time: Long hair wasn't that bad...And that's somehow a gift to be able to have long hair...Healthy hair looks better when it's long.
When the film is good, would you prefer a full-length or a short one?

At 53 it’s a little late to try to piss off my parents. Back in the 60’s though, I did it for the reasons you mentioned, as well as peer pressure. I recently started growing my hair long again though I’m not real clear on my reasons. Maybe I’m showing off because most guys my age couldn’t do it if they wanted to. I had one friend who said that people who drastically change their appearance are having neurotic identity issues. For me, I mostly just got board with my appearance and I kind of enjoy how it actually upsets some people. (Makes them uncomfortable to be around me).

The question is not "Why do you", it is "Why don't"!
I started growing it out without an particular reason. Maybe "fashion".. dunno... Midlong to long hair seems to celebrate a revival in Germany nowadays...

That`s not the same thing, you are a woman and therefore you escape the numerous stereotypes and problems which long haired men face.
guess again

Because I was always meant to have long hair. Even at a very early age, my internal picture of me had long hair. Every few weeks I was dragged reluctantly to the barber shop for a "short back and sides" and every time I swore I would let it grow as soon as I was old enough to make my own desicions. A barber hasn't been near my hair for over twenty years and never will again...

One day my eyes fell (he..he) on a picture in a CD booklet...
and *something* clicked in my head...almost like intuition or instinct...
or whatever...but I just 'knew' it was right for me.
The awkward stage was the TEST-OF-FIRE with my feet against the coals,
but I came through the worst part and I'm glad I did...
I still feel what I felt long ago...
that it IS right for ME!

I was a 16 year old with a buzzcut who wanted to be a heavy metal hero!
Three years later, it's a lot more than that. Now it's a way of flowing with life.

I've had long hair since I was about 14. I grew it because my best friend did. When he died at 18, I vowed to keep it in remembrance of him and what we had together. I'm 40 now, and still got it.

I've just always liked long hair. I was fascinated with long haired men since I was around 5 and had this thing about Moe in the 3 stooges (who was longhaired considering that was around 1959). I do have prosopagnosia so I guess that explains why I have to have long hair and only notice other long haired guys.

Simply, I like having long hair.
I consider it to be my body's own natural hair style.

Ever since I was young I never liked going to the barber. When I was about 13 I was allowed to grow my hair -- though it easn't very long.
Once I was out on my own, I just let it grow. I guess it's always just felt right for me. I was [and still am] into metal, among many other types of music. That probably played a part in my decision to grow my hair, though that wasn't the basis for growing.
In addition, most women seem to like it. I enjoy looking different + the hair feels great. What more can I say?
Rock on!

At 7 I told my mom to stop cutting my bangs. My hair was at mid-back.
At 13 everyone was "feathering" their hair and I had it cut. I was sitting on my hair at that point and they actually weighed the hair that was cut off...10 lbs. of hair was lost that day. I've regretted it ever since.
At 24 I decided no more cuts, but started dying/bleaching it. Trims followed.
At 35 I decided it was time to stop damaging my hair. My hair growth was minimal up to that point. It's growing quite well now!
I've gotten one "trim" to begin straightening the back. Another will follow shortly and will be more than a trim. Once it's straight (all one length) in the back I'll be able to do more styles with it. It's hard to work with hair that is tapered to a point. I think even though it'll be shorter it'll look longer and fuller.

Because I like it long. I like how my long hair feels on my back and my arms, and I like the feel of the wind playing with it.
When I was about 10 years old (around 1965) my parents travelled to London (I lived in Bucharest, Romania, until 1988) and, when they returned, they told, among other things and impressions, how scandalized they were when they saw longhaired boys and men on the streets of the city. I was quite intrigued, as I had been brainwashed with the idea that men were supposed to wear short hair. Later on I saw longhaired men visiting Romania as tourists, and the trend caught with the Romanian youths as well.
Since I was about 11 or 12 I wanted to let my hair long, but I wasn't able to do it until finished school because of the rigid dress code.
When I went on to study engineering at the Polytechnical University in Bucharest I was able to let my hair grow (I was 20 years old at that time), but I had to fight both the school, the authorities (Romania was under a totalitarian communist rule) and my parents (to this day my mother is still harping on my hair length).
A couple of years ago I met my fiance in a discussion group on Yahoo - she contacted me after seeing my picture and was attracted by my hair... Now I am packing my stuff to move together with her.
