Cornrows for Caucasians?
Posted by Moze on October 09, 2003 at 12:39:37: Previous Next
I've seen my little sister with them, so I guess its quite possible, I'm just curious on what a good length would be...My hair is at the tip of my nose now. I'm looking for a style change so my hair can grow and I dont have to constantly have a fro. Thought about dreadlocks, and I dont want anything like that. Also, anyone know how to do cornrows? My sister lives a short distance aways, but its too far to walk in a reasonable ammount of time (and my transmission is out).

I'm not sure, but cornrows seem like they could be stressingly damaging to the hair. I believe those are pulled pretty tight. My wife had those put in one time, didn't look too bad. About it being damaging though, don't take my word for it, there are probably others here who could evaluate that better than I can. Just my own opinion. Peace!

get some one who knows what they are doing and youll be fine,,,,i am white and wish i had thin hair,my hair is about the thickness of my horses hair. i have had them many times and i havent had any trouble,,granted your hair is curly when you remove them,,,but it will go back to normal after a few washes,, you hair is long enough now to get the rows installed, the longer your hair is the longer the tails will be. i say do it,,,but i am not like any others on here,,,i have fun with my hair and enjoy it, i dont baby it at all,,and its healthy,,i color perm straighten braid,,what ever,, and have no split ends or damage.. heck you can break your hair brushing it wrong,,,so just have fun with it,,and be prepared to sit for a while,,they take a while to get in
good luck

a girl where i used to work got them. They looked awesome (she was caucasion btw) but had to get them out cause they were "too tight". Even professionals can wrap to tight if they aren't that familiar with the procedure. Here hair looked horrible, it had to be cut up a few inches. It just looked like crap. Felt bad for her. Its been 2 months and her hair is starting to look normal again......
Everyone wants to look their best through the awkward stage. But the reality is you may just have to deal with the hair you have....wish there were easier ways....(wigs?? yah, too expensive....) goodluck!!!

If it feels like they are pulling too tight, make them start over. The stress on your hair WILL cause damage. It can be done without giving you a headache.
After they are in you can keep them in tact for quite a while. Most just "rub" shampoo on the exposed scalp area when washing is neccessary, and don't take them out until they look like crap.
It is a good option for a "wake up and go with no fuss" hair style.

Let me tell you from first hand experience...DON'T DO IT! Cornrows are not made for Caucasian hair, because our hair is very fine and susceptible to damage. Afro-American hair can handle it, but Caucasian hair will break off halfway up the shaft when you take them out. They are in no way worth the trouble it takes to get them. Do ANYTHING except putting your hair into tight, restrictive braids like that. Please.

I'm a big basketball fan so every year at playoff time I get mine done in cornrows. I wouldn't recommend it more frequently - it does itch and lasts a maximum of ten days for caucasian hair. It gets noticed (my fifteen seconds of fame on SportsCenter at a Sixers/Clippers game two seasons ago) and it makes a change from the usual 'Hey Ozzie!' greetings I get at most Sixers games.
