Man's Best Friend

Said goodbye to my best friend today; Summit, 13yo. Golden Retriever.
Shared many mountain hikes and river swims with my ole' pal. A true water dog and companion. He was with me through many periods in my life; some good some bad. Buried him on a hillside overlooking the river I couldn't keep him out of. Threw one last tennis ball as far as I could heave it. I know he is happily chasing it on the other side waiting to bring it back to me. I'm not ashamed to say I've shed a lot of tears the last few days, and I miss him like hell! Thanks for listening. I know the support here runs deep.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I know just how you feel. I cried longer and harder when I said goodbye to my 14 year old black lab than I did when my father died.
Hang in there. The pain never goes away completely, but it does get a little easier after the passage of time.
Take care.

So sorry to hear of your loss - it brought tears as I have been there. Have lost three, the last one I had to have put to sleep due to kidney failure and held her as the vet gave the shot. Worse part was that she fought it - took three shots before she finally was at rest. Vet said that was unusual.
What happend to yours if you don't mind telling?

You have my sympathy. You can take comfort in the knowing that he
will be happy down at rainbow bridge.
After having many pets die over the years the best thing
to do is go down to the local animal shelter and adopt a new
dog/cat. Many are in need of homes.

I have a copy of the Rainbow Bridge framed and next to a photo of my dog. It's a great verse. There's a small book called "Maya's First Rose" by Martin Scott Kosins that is about losing a dog that helped me a bit too.

As time goes on, memories of the good times will strengthen. Until then, be strong.

My sympathies, that is a tough thing. Our dog died a couple of years ago at age 17. He was a mutt, but looked just like a Golden Retriever. Beautiful dog, well he got kind of knarly looking in his old age, but was still beautiful to us.
This compells me to share an odd experience. We raised our dog w/ an orphaned kitten. They got along fine, always thought the cat believed she was dog. Well, after he died she lasted a bit over a year. We cane home one day (gone for the weekend and the neighbor watched her) and she was dead, laying on the floor, stiff and cold.
I went and dug a hole under the tree out back, carried her out and laid her in it. As I did her leg moved! Brought her back in and made her comfortable and petted her. As I petted her she moved a bit and you could see her breathe now. I finally realized it was my touch that was keeping her struggling to live. I knew it was her time, so I reluctantly stopped petting her and she was gone in 15 minutes.
Never underestimate the power of love and touch. Even in her death she taught me something.
