I was wondering if you could recommend any other bands like NightWish. This whole Symphonic Metal thing has really caught my attention since following your link to Nightwish's web-site and listening to their mp3 section. I was wondering if you know of any Symphonic Metal bands with a male lead singer. That woman has an awesome voice, but I would like to hear a male lead singer with that kind of music. Oh, and Marco has some awesome hair, man. Photo below:
Peace!

Sty, this has nothing to do with your post.
I just thought you would look cool with a goatee, Treyn. Just a suggestion.

Thanks, dude. I am currently growing my goatee back out. I can't get that good of a goatee because of the indian blood in me, but I managed to get a decent one back in November of last year, then I shaved it. The photo of me with that goatee is below:
Peace!

Pardon my French, but what the @#$% kind of pretentious label is that?! "True Metal"?! There's no such thing! Just genres and sub-genres!

I disagree completely. False Metal is sell out metal. True Metal respects the roots and origins. Again, Death To False Metal...rallying cry of bands such as Manowar and their ilk.

Dude, the very second any band steps into a studio to record their music for the purpose of selling producing an album they can sell to their fans, they've "sold out". If they really wanted to play for the sake of the music and the fans, they'd continue doing so for free.
Music taste is a matter of perspective. Some like one style, others like another. There's nothing "true" about any one style. It's that simple.

Hear Hear! (except for polka, because nobody wants to write anything that remotely sounds like a polka, so that one genre is isolated as "pure")

You realize, of course, that you're generalizing Nightwish's lyric-base, based on just one song of their's, Elvinpath. They write about so much more than that. Kinslayer, for example, is Tuomas's response to the Columbine shootings.
I won't expound any further, but if you really think Nightwish is about singing about elves, then you don't know Nightwish. I suggest that you check out their web site and actually read the lyrics to all of their songs.

: This whole Symphonic Metal thing has really caught my attention...
Glad to hear it! I love recruiting converts! :D
I love it because it combines my two most favorite styles of music: classical, and metal. It's actually a sub-genre of metal called Neo-Classical Metal.
Neo-Classical Metal takes its inspiration from the great composers of the Renaissance, baroque and romantic periods. Because Metal as a general rule has a similar song stucture to most classical compositions, it explains the impulse that drove Neo-Classical Metal bands and solo artists to create their music according to the older style. Neo-Classical Metal often features amazing guitar parts, very similar song stuctures to the short sonata, and focuses mainly on the virtuoso of the instrumentists. Sometimes known as Chamber Metal, the songs are usually longer in format, and busier. Normally, in metal, songs don't follow the 3 minute radio format, and especially in Neo-Classical and its subgenres, the songs will be much longer. Songs will often play between 4:30 and 6:00, as a standard, while bolder bands will have up to 10-15 minute songs, most of which are instrumental. Neo-Classical is still a very European(and Japanese) phenonenon, but it is slowly gaining interest here in the US. Neo-Classical also brought something that is not very common in modern music: composers. There are a variety of metal composers, that hire artists to play their music for them. Yngwie J. Malmsteen was the first to do so.
Neo-Classical bands, artists, and composers include Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Symphony X, Angra, Rhapsody, Royal Hunt, Majestic, Stratovarius, and Beto Vasquez Infinity.
Symphonic Metal is probably the most important sub-genre of Neo-Classical Metal. Symphonic is more like an adjective than anything else, but it became a style of it's own. Symphonic is, as the name implies, based on the classical symphony. Like the classical symphony, most songs are based on the same four movements, Overture, Theme, Minuet and Finale. Not only the song structure, but also the instrumentation is taken from Classical Symphony. Symphonic Metal will often have keyboard orchestration that replicates the strings section of the classical symphonic orchestra. As said before, "symphonic" acts more as an adjective, but especially when bands of different subgenres have elements of Symphonic Metal.
Some Symphonic Metal bands include Rhapsody, Symphony X, Sonata Artica, Limbonic Art, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir.

Treyn,
Check out, as Nyghtfall suggested, Symphony X. They are one of the best bands that I have ever heard. Their Guitarist, Michael Romeo, is one of the best in the business. Specifically, check out their "Odyssey" album. The music is awesome and is very well composed.
Also, check out a band called Evergrey. Listen to their "Recreation Day" album. The title track is incredible.
check out Wuthering Heights

great band, from denmark i believe. their newest album, "far from the maddening crowd", is absolutely incredible. it's more folky/power metal oriented, but the singer is damn good, and the music just blows me away!! as others have mentioned, definately check out symphony x, and evergrey.

like they say, symphony x is good, but after a few months of really liking them, they started to sound to aggressive, abrasive, just less beautiful to me, and more mean spirited. of course i still like them though.
however, if you're into power metal, especially "symphonic" as it is called, i would definately recommend sonata arctica, rhapsody, and luca turilli. i think sonata arctica isn't is popular and the vocals aren't as good in a traditional sense, but i somehow relate to the vocals . . . it's hard to explain, but i really love sonata arctica. rhapsody is very "triumphant", and does lots of war or battle music. also get more of nightwish. even after having lots of their stuff, i got more and it was different but still just as good. they have a very large range of genre, and it's all great.
and . . . i think most of them have long hair.
