What kind of Jobs do you guys have??

I know this has nothing to do with long hair or any kind of type of hair for that matter but i am struggling to find a job. Everybody knows it is tough out there. I would just like to know what does everyone do here (if they have a job) for a career? I would like to get some ideas from fellow long hairs. Thanks

I don't currently have long hair, but I did for about ten years. I've worked in higher education through it all and I've found that it's a pretty good environment for any kind of hair style -- whether you're working as a teacher or in administration. Even the business folks seem pretty cool about it!

im actually on the recieving end of higher education at the minute, and due to a very inspiring lecturer, amongst other things, i would love to teach higher education in the future. plus i agree, its a pretty liberal environment, unlike other jobs i will be qualified for, which also makes me think it may suit my personality. keep up the good work!

I'm a technical writer for a software company. I wear kilts to work, have NEVER worn slacks to the office, and get nothing but compliments and encouragement on my nascent hair.
For all its pains and particularities, the software industry is one of the most long-hair friendly.

Currently, I'm an intern with Kenzer and Company.
www.kenzerco.com.
For those unaware, they are a game/comics company
mainly. They produce Kingdoms of Kalamar, an
official Dungeons and Dragons campaign setting
and related works, and Hackmaster, a standalone
RPG, and the Knights of the Dinner Table comic
book.
Lest you get the impression I'm doing something
really cool, I'm not really. I'm just an intern.
I do a lot of copying papers, packing orders,
that sort of thing. I do get to cast miniatures
though, which is rather cool.
Heh, I feel kinda strange mentioning it here, I wonder
if this post'll turn up over there someday...
It wouldn't take them long to figure out who this is.
The only other guy there with long hair cut his a couple
weeks ago.

What the (bleep) did he do that for? If I have a good job that I am happy with and that if they accept long hair at work I'd never cut it!

I'm a Materials Engineering Technician...I wear my hair tied in a tight ponytail (3 hair ties) and slick it back. As long as your hair is perceived to be "clean" and well kept, u won't get flack from anybody that matters!
Go after a job u enyoy (if people that matters were critical bout vain things, I wouldn't enjoy the job)!

I work in a top-notch fine-dining restaurant as a server, and have hair just above my shoulders (bangs go down to my chin). I have just begun playing with a pony-tail but the bangs refuse to stay in it and I hate putting gel into my hair because of that crunchy feeling it gives.
I have tried playing with "wax" or "hair-gum" products, but do not like how they (don't) wash out entirely. Any ideas out there? (and i do not want to put in bobby pins....)

You might try wearing a high ponytail... I remember, back in '01, when my bangs were that length, they'd go in, if I pulled my hair up, instead of back and down for the tail. And, no, I wasn't concerned and am still not concerned that it might give a fem appearance. I really don't care.

Boy, do I know how you feel. At the 2 year mark with hair just
past my shoulders - only guy in the building - I sweat it sometime when the comments are fired in my direction. I will and have tried any product going. Like none of them. I do from time to time wear it in a pony tail but at work it just doesn't feel right. I prefer the long free hair. My recent success - till the next crisis - is Brushing my hair. I was brushing it with a rake/pick comb that other long hairs / only women as I am the only guy with long hair / had suggested. The women have said it looks good and they are the first to complain and do. They always want me to cut it so it is even or whatever, and i say okay I will next week, but I don't, of course. I basically do whatever it takes a the moment to keep the comment heat down - even if I had to wear a wig till the hair was earier to handle I would - but I haven't had to thank goodness. I always mention about getting a wig when the heat is high and I know they don't want me running around the building in a wig so they back off. Now, let's see what colour!! I have very fine hair so although I would like to wash it every day I usually skip a day or two because it is so fine it just floats in the air - not nice. My best advvise is try every suggestion or product except cutting your hair and hold on for the ride. Good rides are always scary, bumpy and worth the bruising!

Mark, I am probably the last guy that should comment because I have worked for the same employer for 30 years. From observation, experience and what others have told me - and you would act no differently - it is the disposition, experience, knowledge, skill, reliability among other things that determine whether ones gets a job or not. The number of applicants also, of course, affects your chances. If you have everything an employer is looking for but there is something he doesn't like such a long hair or rings in the nose or whatever, chances are he/she will say so - if we call you and you get the job, after we have completed the other interviews, you will have to cut your hair or remove the rings from your nose, whatever. Good, potential employees are hard to find. Employers don't want to lose
you or anyone else, but on the other hand they may have a conservative client base such as very religious people, ethnic minorities that would
find such appearances strange and upsetting. The toughest part for someone is if they have little or no experience. It takes time and opportunity - older guys like myself have been there - to get our foot in the door. Be patient. It would, of course, help us if you told us what kind of experience you have or the work you are looking for because other posters may have experience in your area of employment interest and offer you a few suggestions to increase your chances at your next interview. Keep the faith, have patience, you'll be fine.
