That's just a stereotype...
I like the type of pop and soft music many long and shorthairs hate, or at least they say.
Good question...

I'm not really a metal head at all. I like lots of different styles of music. Some of my favorite styles are:
Alternative Rock
Instrumental (stuff like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, etc...)
Emotional Rock ("emo" and "screamo")
Punk (old school as well as some newer)
Indie
Electronic
Ska
Other stuff...
The stereotype is so worn out, I think...

country, rap, or anything after 1980. I started growing my hair
with Beatles, so my tastes stem from the Beatles Stones Cream

You`re right. I started by listening to old Modern Talking (a German band, with a long haired singer)
Then upon hearing the guitar solo in one of their songs (Atlantis is callin), I got in guitar and then into Heavy Metal which is exclusively guitar based.

Hi there, I surfed in looking for krautrock sites and I read your letter. I I have suggestions for you, bands you will miss just because they end up in the deathmetal section, section that you do not look into. They are graet bands with lots of potential an d should not be overlooked by prog lovers.
Arcturus, Winds, and most of the stuff on Jester records.

i think that most longhairs have a better taste in music than the average person... and varied taste as well. myself, i listen to just about all sub-genres of metal, but i also love classic rock, blues, jazz, some trance/electronic stuff if done right, classical, and even some opera, and folk. i don't really listen to what you'd call "mainstream", i very rarely listen to music on the radio, and if i do it's the classic rock station. music is one of the things i love most in life, i am constantly listening to music... and i aspire to create it as well. i used to be the lead singer in a hard rock band for 4 or 5 years or so... i play guitar, bass, piano, some trumpet, and drums. but to jump back on the main post i'm replying to, yes i'm a metalhead i guess, as it's the style i listen to most. :)

I've noticed that a lot of ppl responded by citing "alternative" rock or "alternative" music without citing actual bands. Personally, I find the term "alternative" much too generic. Just what is "alternative" supposed to mean anymore? At one time, grunge rock (ie Soundgarden, Mudhoney) would have been considered 'alternative,' and yet, it did not take long before grunge music became absorbed into the mainstream. "Alternative" ... Alternative to what??? How alternative can your sound be when your sound has become mainstream?

'Tis such a generic term, with little to no meaning or relevance. "Alternative" has indeed become mainstream - MTV has a very very firm grasp on the minds of teenagers everywhere (except me, haha). Pretentious pre-packaged rebellion. "The anti-marketing market" as Bill Hicks once called it.
These 'non conformist' folks who lap up "alternative" tripe are one of the many reasons why multinationals and globalisation are getting stronger!
"Alternative", pah. Please be more specific, folks - as I refuse to believe you're all mindless music-video watching drones.
I remember seeing on the Napalm Death website a while ago: "Alternative to what? Talent?"...Made me chuckle at the time anyway!

For a self-proclaimed teenager, you're listening to truly 'alternative' stuff in the sense that the artists you mentioned have never been embraced by the corporate media (And for good reason, too). I'm not terribly familiar with Napalm Death, but I what little material I have heard from the band. I am, however, very familiar with Bill Hicks, and there may be no comedian that I have more respect for than he.

I hope I don't sound like an arrogant @#%$!, but sometimes I think I am the only teenager with such clarity of vision. I really do despise all this pre-packaged, so-called counter culture "individualism" perpetuated subliminally (and often not so subliminally) by MTV, Kerrang and Q etc.
Perhaps paradoxically, however, I also hate the "they're teens, they're stupid but think they know everything" mentality. As much as I hate my peers for the most part, that kind of "age discrimination" if you will, also annoys me greatly.
Napalm Death are a great band, by the way. And - as you mentioned - 100% of the music I listen to is completely shunned by the media at large. Thats no conscious decision on my part either!

PS: You almost make Napalm sound like a culturally damaging band, there. I'm not one to place any blame on music for the actions of people, but there is more 'dangerous' material in music on TV and on the radio than you will find in the sub-genres of 'extreme metal'.
I think that lyrically, Napalm Death the healthiest band a person can possibly listen to!

I'm not sure how you came to that impression; I have no problem with Naplam Death. I haven't heard more than a handful of the band's songs, but I did enjoy those few that I've heard. I do not find the band, its music, its lyrics, or anything directly connected to it 'dangerous' in a conventional sense of the term. I imagine that mainstream media considers the band 'dangerous' in the sense that its members think for themselves and do not follow trends (especially commercial trends).

Aye. I couldn't agree more...
Unfortunately though, there are trends amongst people who strongly feel that they are non-conformists. People who consider themselves "gothic" (something a metal fan like myself is often mistaken for, annoyingly enough) for example, actually adhere to a rather strict dress code and often an 'attitude code', if I'm making any sense - all whilst proclaiming to be "individuals"!
I find such labels very restrictive, and people who apply such labels willingly to *themselves* are just stupid, in my book.
Are we ok to discuss such things here? We're only using up one thread, but I suppose all this could be considered grossly off-topic.

I usually listen to music which is at least 20 years old and never made it into the charts - such as German krautrock of the 70s or such obscure 70s/80s electronic musicians like the Silver Apples, Droids or Tom Ware... and I strongly doubt that there ever will be a revival hype about them!
